I actually wanted to do this blog yesterday

Because it was valentine I needed to focus my attention otherwise, but i was fascinated by this story that I heard on the radio..

It's the story of Julia Pastrana, Once elected as the ugliest women on earth. She was born in 1843 and she had some rare diseases.. Because of that she looked uhmm somewhat different.. well just look for yourself..

In those days she wasn't even seen as a real human. People figured she was a crossing of a human and a orangutan. Her later to be husband bought her and put her on a freak show to travel the world with her.. Even after her death, she and her son were balsemed and preserved so Her agent (husband) could keep touring with her and keep making money with her.
She died in 1860 in Russia, her body somehow ended up in Norway.. but now after all these years.. she finally was returned to her place of birth in mexico where last tuesday, she finally had a token of acceptance to humanity.. she finally was burried as a human.. I hope she will rest in peace.

I do wonder if those diseases still excist in our time.. I would suppose they do.. and how difficult it would be to cure them nowadays.
Baartman was sold[citation needed] to a Frenchman, who took her to his country. She was in France from around September 1814. An animal trainer, S. Réaux, exhibited her under more pressured conditions for fifteen months. French naturalists,

There were sporadic calls for the return of her remains, beginning in the 1940s, but the case became prominent only after Stephen Jay Gould wrote The Hottentot Venus in the 1980s. After the victory of the African National Congress in the South African general election, 1994, President Nelson Mandela formally requested that France return the remains. After much legal wrangling and debates in the French National Assembly, France acceded to the request on 6 March 2002. Her remains were repatriated to her homeland, the Gamtoos Valley, on 6 May 2002 and they were buried on 9 August 2002 on Vergaderingskop, a hill in the town of Hankey over 200 years after her birth.

I'm sure these mutations still occur today, some can be helped by surgery, but I hope the people affected will be able to have more human dignity than Julia experienced. sad flower

Kn, I hope so too.

serenity4two.. as a nurse.. you know anything more about these diseases and if they ahve found a cure or something for it?
sadly there will always be rare genetic mutations Teddy --where physical deformities will be present in varying degrees -
some dermatological diseases are treatable --
but in cases of diseases that are rare , often money will not be found to fund research for cures unfortunately .

Some of you guys need to get your facts straight.

Joseph Merrick[ Elephant man] Chose to go on public display. Yes he was exploited, but it was his choice originally.
Jenny, she didn't really have a choice in her life.. she was sold to a guy when she was just a child.. he actually trained her to perform, dancing and such.. He also teached her to write and I guess somewhere down the line he had developed some feelings for her since he gotten her pregnant. I found it very sad that even after she died he still exploited her to make money. He should have given her a decent burial right away.
Greed is a bad thing.. and he sure was greedy if he felt he could exploit a woman in such a way as he did.
Of course Teddy nothing in life is black & white, one could argue about what sort of life she would have had in her native land dunno And that she may well have had an enjoyable life by the standards of the time, it may not be palatable by today's standards but in her time she may well have been considered a star dunno
zman, well she was famous.. and I guess life in mexico would have been hard as well in those days.. But still doesn't seem right to me.
