It is possible, by what you say, that you're using the drill bit inappropriate for the type of wall you intend to drill.

That material is the trave of the wall?

Yes im afraid it looks like im stumped!!!! ...Thought there'd be a few builders on here that might have a suggestion or two!.... :(
And ive just been out and bought an 800 watt drill for the job :)
this video will help.it shows how to do it.

Maybe your problem lies only in the type of bit you're using, try using a special drill bit for concrete.

Thankyou all..... I'm not sure now that i was using the correct drill bit, as i thought i should be using a masonry bit for brickwork but im now wondering if i should be using another type for a steel lintel??????...and perhaps i need a more powerful drill...... I thought an 800w set on the hammer setting would be ok........oh well you live and learn :)
Happy, yes a masonry bit if fine & hammer yes, but as an example I have a 2000w Bosch drill that takes a week to drill concrete but my 800w Hitachi professional drill goes through it like a knife through butter, so power rating doesn't mean a lot when it comes to drills.
Well, as somebody said about too many advisers, but everything said so far is true. If you have a proper impact drill with the right bit as shown by somebody else you should get it right. Just a last suggestion, check if the hammer action is selected. Without it you will get what you are now getting. It makes a heck of a noise, but it works. Look for a little symbol of a hammer on the drill; somewhere near a selector lever of some kind.
A lintel is 90mm most of the time so 100mm above the top of the window should work. Information supplied by my handy brother who always helps me out when I mess things up. Broadest one is 110mm but you don't get that often.
Right! I shall try drilling 100 mm above the window! The worst can happen is the ceiling will fall down!!!... Ive def got the drill on hammer setting... End of tea break and up we go!!!! :)
bazuka should do the trick
Bazukas r no that good.i tried those before.but if u use kalashnikov, then its best.2 hots and ur curtain holes r ready.laugh
is the house down yet ? thumbs up
No but i could have quite easily have thrown myself out of the window in despair!!!.....6 hours later and job still not done!......I have instead enlisted the help of someone down the road, and hopefully while he's here he can tell me where i went wrong...... Dont know the man but i'm told he's a builder.....Hope he turns up!

Right! ..what else needs doing???!....Oh yes! All those holes need filling! :)
Thanks Ed1491 and everyone else, but i know when i'm beaten ??))
forget drilling and get yourself a tube of gripfill and an adhesive gun, tenner will get both at any hardware shop
applause applause applause applause to all!

I'll bring the champagne and we celebrate!
