After 2007,Dubai expreienced the crisis. A lot of westerners left their expensive cars and house morgages in Dubai,cos Lehman brothers problem also got some deep effect in the Dubai economy.Finally Abu Dhabi bailed Dubai government out.A lot of people think Dubai failed,I had thought the same. but later on as I lived in UAE since 2011 on and off, so that I visited Dubai. And I had some idea about this wonder in middle east.
Before 2007,most people think Dubai got lots of oil reserve, so that they are rich. Which in fact is wrong, UAE oil reserve is around 9% of the world, for a country with small population, it means everyone is rich. But wait a moment, 90% or more of the oil reserve is in Abu Dhabi. So Dubai know they don't have much oil reserve.
This is the smart thing about Dubai: We know it is easy to lead a good life if the family or government is rich,like Abu Dhabi; Dubai don't have much oil reserve,what had they done? They kept silent of these,so lots of investors invested in Dubai,cos they felt Dubai is rich.A lot of big investment were poured into Dubai. So Dubai have built the largest shopping mall in the world, and the large airport, and also built lots of road system, flyovers. And Dubai got lots of beach, so that in winter time, it is so nice to enjoy nice beach with courtesy Indian or Philipines to serve you in the hotels.
As so much investment poured into Dubai, so that in a short several years, Dubai rises up as almost the center or playground for middle east.
As an outsider of Muslim, we will not think much of the bars in UAE to sell alcohol, but for a Muslim country, this is a bold step.
Again we get back to Dubai government, if the Lehman brothers crisis will not happen, Dubai government plan will be ok.. But there is not an " if" in front of facts. For business men who invested in Dubai, they found out, Dubai government finally has got the help from Abu Dhabi government. A lot of business closed during this crisis. And Dubai property price collapsed down over half. I have known some people who bought off-plan buildings, until now, there is not a worker on the desert site at all. The money from the people who invested evaporated in the desert.
But Dubai built almost the best infrastructure,look at now, everything comes back to life. Property price goes up again, more westerners and expats come back to work here. People stop buying off-plan buildings,more cautious.
In general, Dubai government have done and indeed attracted big investment to build up the city. The smart strategy created the present Dubai.
For anyone who plan to live in Dubai, we need just learn from the lessons. Dubai have lots of bars, nice beach resorts, hotels for you to enjoy, but you need always keep something aside for your life. Just in case in life there might be some strong storm which might destroy the business, you have to pack up with your job. If you stretch yourself too much, when harsh time comes, that's it? Are these the faults of Dubai?

As an outsider, I would say, the leaders do seem to have very good way to make their own national people happy, and take care of their wellfare, which is not being done in most modern countries even.
Their leaders also get supported by their people, in their national days, just imagine, the local people really celebrate it as a festival. I understand the emeraties a bit more.
