Spiritual, but not Religious
I have been on this site for about 2 weeks, and I have noticed when I read through some of the profiles on blogs and the forums, that there are many who check Spiritual, but not religious on their profiles.Maybe I haven't obtained just yet, and haven't gotten there ... Therefore, I am hoping for a better understanding of the meaning of this phrase "SPIRITUAL, BUT NOT RELIGIOUS",maybe someone will be able to enlighten me as to what this phrase means to you who use it on your profile.
See, I am very proud to say, that I am a born-again Christian and God's Word teaches me many things about Himself, myself, and others, and how to live a productive life-style here on earth while awaiting the return of Jesus Christ who will set-up His earthly kingdom for all who believe in Him to reign and live forever, its a new life after death.
As pertaining to this phrase "Spiritual, but not religious", I have been wondering its meaning. I would like to know, so I will also know whose report I should believe, because the Word of God teaches me this:
(1)To be Spiritual minded is to have spiritual sights into the things of God with knowledge and understanding, to be able to discern the spiritual things concerning Him with godly wisdom,to have inner peace, and to spiritually understand life.
(2)To be truly religious is to follow the statues and laws of God ritually, his/her life-style is undefiled before God, is faithful in caring for the needs of the widows, orphans, and is unspotted before the world.
(3) To be a Christian is to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ as a disciple or student faithfully, to take care of the needs of the poor and needy, to love unconditionally, to freely give of self, to be full of mercy and grace, to rebuke and reproof wrong, and to obey, speak, preach, teach the Word of God without compromise.
Therefore, help me to understand how a person can say he/she is SPIRITUAL, BUT NOT RELIGIOUS.
If according to what God teaches it means to be spiritual, religious, and a Christian... Then, How can a person be spiritual, but not be religious; how can a person be religious, but not be a Christian; how can a person be a Christian, but not be SPIRITUAL AND RELIGIOUS, AND not obey God's Holy Word with a heart of love toward his/her fellowman?

profile and I have that one, I thought mine said
catholic, anyway I don't go to church any more.
The term spiritual is not copyright to YOUR god or YOUR religion...
I live by a set Universal Laws that are far superior to any laws made by man or found in any bible.
....
I think that would be more "Religious but not Spiritual"
You are a Christian, as I am. On my profile, I have Christian/Other. I don't belong to a denomination so I just put in Christian.
Lots of people on here have different beliefs and many classify them as Spiritual.
Hope this helps.

Also look up the meaning of the word Agnostic. Any serious attempt at research will show you how the Bible was made. Yes, made. Put together back in 324 by a Roman Emperor as a tool to be used to run his Empire. So we have agnostics who are also called, spiritual but not religious.
In my case - and many other spiritual people - I do not follow any leaders nor dogmas and I am a free spirit.
I am not following any institutionalized religion and I cannot say I am Christian...so that being said spiritual is another way of describing my personal philosophy... I really don't understand others who cannot wrap heir head around alternative ways of being...not up for debate...I respect your beliefs, so please respect others' spirituality!!...
I am too a Christian and termed spiritual and religious as I strive to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and I go out to church.
I do not fear God, but rather I love Him deeply.
As for your question about spiritual but not religious, I totally can understand this. I have come to know many people on this site, who are good, spiritual people with a beautiful outlook on life and live life`s of goodness and kindness. I believe they live by the spirit within their souls which leads them to light. I have great respect for how they live. I think this site has enhanced my outlook on different cultures and religion and believes. What I have loved the most is how we are able to embrace each other and accept each others believes with love and compassion and respect.
Good luck in your search with whatever you are looking for on this site.
Uh! What She and he said.. . . . .
Thank you for your comment. No I'm not worried, I was just courious and wondering if those who state they are spiritual, but not religious really knew what it was all about, and how such worked. but I did find the answer from a research article and many other readings.
Basically, from all the articles read, SBNR, are those who are unchurched who have never gone to church nor were raised in the church as a child, nor did their parents attend; they are those who know nothing about God because they reject the truth of what God's Word has to says, so they distance themselves from reading the Bible and cast it off as being "just a book written by mere men" yet, they read and believe in other books that are written by secular men; some lacked faith to believe in God, because they want things to go their way or no way (rebellious, disobedient, stubborn, etc.), and do not understand what faith is, or how faith works; many are angry at God, because they may have prayed for something and nothing happened, or prayed for someone dear to them who was sick and that person still died; some have been hurt by the leadership in a churches, and have given up hope.
There were so many other reasons found as to why people use the phrase Spiritual, but not Religious. But mainly, they use the phrase, and really don't know what the phrase means themselves, but as long as it disconnects them from the local church, they will use it. But no one is without excuse for not believing in a true living God whether a person attends church or not. Cuz, GOD IS FOR REAL! Ripples believe it or not
As the saying goes, I would rather live my life on earth as a person believing there is a God, and then die, only to find out there really is no God or no heaven or hell; than, to live my life on earth as a person believing there is no God, and then die, only to find out there really is a God, a heaven and a hell. wow! that would be messed up!
All very interesting... thanks again for your comment. Stay blessed
