The Great Hunger

It has always amazed me, with all the great movie directors and writers in the world who constantly strive to create a great story or great movie, especially those based on the truth, why there has never been a movie made about the 'Great Famine' in Ireland of 1845 to 1852.
I have my own ideas as to why not, but would be very interested in the views of others.

Hi Madoc. Good question. I expect it is all down to political correctness and not raking up the past. We mustn't upset certain people!! To be honest, if there were to be a film about it, I would hope that it would not be a Hollywood blockbuster. They do tend to romanticise things somewhat. We would probably have dreadful, "stage Irish" accents, from Hollywood darlings, polluting our screens.
We have had short Irish films made but no blockbusters.
Must have been a truly dreadful time.

Wiki:The Great Famine (Irish: an Gorta Mór) or the Great Hunger was a period of mass starvation, disease, and emigration in Ireland between 1845 and 1852. It is sometimes referred to, mostly outside Ireland, as the Irish Potato Famine, because about two-fifths of the population was solely reliant on this cheap crop for a number of historical reasons. During the famine, approximately 1 million people died and a million more emigrated from Ireland, causing the island's population to fall by between 20% and 25%
While all the goods and animals produced were being exported to the rest of the world and the people producing these goods left without enough to eat. British rule saw to that
Yes, it was a terrible time in our history. However, we cannot go on laying blame. Far better to show, that despite all that has happened to us in the past, we have a beautiful and strong nation, to be proud of.
I would rather see a good television series made about it, rather than a film. You could not possibly tell the whole story in one film. It would be far too diluted.
I agree with you, but what really needs to be told is the real truth of that time, not the version that was told by the British press
