Dance Mania

In 1374 AD, thousands of people in the streets of Aachen, Germany, suddenly began to dance, jump, squeal, and twitch uncontrollably until they collapsed from exhaustion, or died from heart attack or stroke. Strangely, this mysterious case of dance mania was not an isolated event but was repeated in Italy, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Holland, and Switzerland over the next three centuries. Was there a physical cause to these unusual events, or was it simply a case of mass hysteria...
