Changing times.....

in many ways.... Much calls for adaptability in life styles. Many are often technological or social, and many commercial.
On this last issue, my manual cork screw opening of a bottle of wine for a dinner beverage, got me thinking. Ever a risky event.
Many will remember real lead foil cork covers, as well as real (Portuguese) tree bark corks. Still present in costlier wines, but sadly, even here are evolving toward less expensive and fossil fuel alternatives. Even to boxes, and to screw off caps. What next?
We all hear that the horse dress and saddle industry died with the motor car, and that soon other work became available. With a corresponding general improvement in life for all.
But I'm not so sure. On both points. However.....
Gotta use my gold plated, 5 speed, bimanual, doubles as a fly swatter, rechargeable electric back scratcher, for a spell. Buzzzzzzzz. Ahhhhhhhhh! Now there's the rub.
Oh no, snow storm on the way with power outages. Whatever is one to do? Wait, there are rumours of machines called generators.

Happy joyous winter solstice, all....

...likely a more important event each year in the far North and South. What with cabin fever, SADS, and the rest of it, not to mention the cold, it's arrival seems to lift many a spirit. More sun.
Of course, at least for us few living in the heaven that is the developed world, comparatively speaking, life is softer, than that of ancestors, only some few generations ago.
When Bravo and I take our walks, I'm keen to come upon centuries old homesteads, all in rubble states, mostly over grown, and we often enter what's left for an historical inspection. It's common to find items to aid daily life, if one sniffs about some, and a dog's nose/curiosity never hurt in these regards. Old storage container items, utensils, rarely a piece of material with scribbles on it, things long replaced with more convenient 'necessities'---all make for feeling of gratitude, when I think of those shorter and much harder hard lives.
I've been poor, and I've been rich---rich is better. Or?

The vow

I have just finished watching 'the vow' about sex cult in the states masquerading as a type of self help group. In it women are portrayed as entitled princesses and men as protectors who basically resent the women.it seems that by categorizing both sexes as such, both sexes feel shame, anyone any thoughts on this concept or the series in general?

Fuddy Duddy Daddy...

I was in Junior High attending a school dance and hanging out with friends. We were noticing parents dropping their children when I spotted a really pretty girl and what appeared to be her grandparents waving goodbye. They said "have a good time" and told her what time they would return to pick her up.
Since I didn't know the girl, I asked my friend if he knew her. His answer was yes, she's in his homeroom class and her parents were really strict. Wondering, I asked "Is that why the grandparents dropped her off?" My friend said those ARE her parents. He also knew the girl was self conscious about it. She was very embarrassed when they came to the first patent teacher meeting and all the other kids had younger parents.

I had a friend in the same position. He was an only child who came along late in the marriage. His father was already retired when he was in Junior High.

Somewhere along the way, I heard the phrase Fuddy Duddy Daddy that described a really old father to a young son. That saying stuck with me.

A coworker who is 20 years younger than me once called me 'Gramps' and I replied "Are you talking to me?" It's funny, as he relies on me to do some computerized design drawings... because he can't. The sad part is his father passed away last week. He was in a nursing home with advanced stage Alzheimer's and contacted COVID-19. Either way, his fathers days were numbered.

Over the years, I've been asked why I didn't have children of my own...
Simple answer... I didn't want to be a Fuddy Duddy Daddy!

Moving to Miami...

I see in the news that Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner have purchased a $30 million plot of land in Indian Creek formerly owned by Julio Inglesias.
That's about 90 minutes from Mar-a-Lago by car... longer by jet ski.

Adam Smith's 'invisible hand',....

and centuries later, Mr. Greenspan's 'primacy of profit'...., insights into the powers of the free markets, to provide for our needs. As opposed to socialism, or worse, and the failed, VERY failed, 'planned economies'. Count them all.
In some lectures by Canadian (eh?) wannabee Illuminati member economist, Dr. Mark Carney, these concepts were mentioned, in the context of the alleged immorality of Capitalism.
The party line is the absence of what makes people happy and secure in this last named system of production and wealth distribution, ceteris parabus.
Well, even these alt leftie, white guilt, self loathing banker types will admit to two important trends over the past decades. For one, that the systems with the vapid 5 year plans all have failed, and in the process, have caused enormous human misery. If you deny this, have your nurse or doctor bump up the dosages of your medicines for reality testing.
And, similarly, that under Capitalism, the percentages of utterly poor continues to decrease, in many places, and remarkably so.
This is not to say that the many poor are no longer with us, as they always will be. But somehow to try to induce 'social morality' into the fix is wishful thinking. As evidenced by the above, and...
The inability to ope-rationalize or even to crudely measure such social variables, for economic models.
The need for the confiscatory redistribution of hard earned wealth in any such plans. Communism is wonderful, until it runs out of other peoples' assets.
And so, in the words of Republican slave freer President Honest Abe, "You can't help the poor by making the well off poor themselves".
In order for these plans to be put into place, big, VERY big, statist government is said to be needed. Just how is that working out in the many Dem ruled big government cities, and elsewhere? Minorities there more happy?
In planned economies, supposedly all promising equality, "from each's ability, to each's needs", soon a tiny ruling (Party) class emerges, and hangs onto power. Often using force and violence.

And so much more. Be careful what we ask for. The Great Reset, my foot.
