I always wanted something like this, but the few I read about all went downhill as a result of personal greed among people.

Yes, lots of people verbally idealise this life-style - but as you say, it seems to just not ever work out. Almost always there is someone skimming something.......?

In practice there would always be those who'd sit under a tree as for a rest and end up sleeping there most of the days.

Actually lived in one back in the day for about 6 months and internal strife between the worker bees and kick backs was an issue.
I've always loved the Idea of a community... but I think personal space is necessary. I read once about an old deserted village in the Ligurian hills where artists started buying and remodeling and live as a more free form community, each with their own spaces but in a friendly communal atmosphere....with spaces for artists passing thru to stay and work on a project...it has now become quite well known for it's open air art market on weekends in fair weather I think.
To me this would be perfect. I know that I have a very small nuclear family, yet I enjoy many people the I "Choose" to be around and some folks blood families are best left behind as harmful to most living, growing things. I think that sense of belonging to a group is quite fundamental to the human animal and has become lost in the last 'me, me, me' isolationist period... I don't think that it's good for people.

If you could have the opportunity to live the rest of your life in a Kibutz style community, where everyone is equal, and work is fairly divided in the general upkeep, maintenance, all your basic needs are met, and no-one has more, or less, than others. Women do womens-type work and men do mens-type work, but you are not restricted, you are free to change duties to what you most enjoy and are good at.
The children all grow up with this extended family caring for them, everyone eats together, there are recreation facilities on this huge "farm" that provides for all tastes. And the harder you all work, the better the recreation facilities you are all able to contribute.
The aged continue to live in this extended family - no-one gets put into Institutions.
Would any of you prefer this type of lifestyle that provides you with total security?.. But you dont get to extend your own personal Empire? (you own nothing in the end).
