zee1ander: Yet, you can't own a gun.... so there are NO guns.... and there are gun murders..... how can that be?

zee

There are very few gun or knife murders in Scotland ...just a handful compared to the USA...

You have more chance of getting knocked over by a bus....

Those kind of comparisons are hard to really make though, the population of the US is over 350,000,000 I could say the same here that I have a much higher chance of being struck by a bus that was set on fire by lightening then I do of being stabbed... But it also depends on where I am.. if I am in a town of 5000 people then yes very low odds everyone knows everyone... if I am in a city of 10,000,000 people the odds increase enormously.

The same would very likely hold true if Scotland had a city with 10,000,000 people living and working within 4 miles of each other... maybe...

Just some thoughts on the comparisons going on, because small town America is still something I find truly beautiful and I leave my doors open at night never lock my car and feel very free to walk wherever and whenever I want without fear. So it bothers me when such sweeping statements are made about many of the towns I have loved and raised children in without I might add ever having owned a gun save the one time I lived in Phoenix and worked as a Security Guard.

Anyway I will back away from the thread now. Best to everyone,

lets not discuss the knifing going on in the UK

lets pull some of those numbers shall we?

i dont understand why one incident condemns a country or give someone the right to make such comments about an entire population

confused

this is EXACTLY the kind of stuff that causes and enlarges prejudices-having an experience and then stretching it to a whole groupmoping

I'm not saying the laws here are perfect, the system has too many laws as it is. Here if a person breaks into your house and hurts himself, he can sue the homeowner.... what kind of stupid law is that? This very thing happened in California when I was living there. The criminal won a large settlement.

A gun is just a tool... nothing more. If y'all want to give it mythic status, so be it.

Actually I went to bed about 10pm or so local time and woke up about 6am local time. Gave me about 7-1/2 hours of sleep. Thank you for your concern though.... hey.... wait a minute.... what about you?

ooby_dooby:
It felt like the wild west with no laws other than my .270 to protect us.

Life in Wash DC was similar; much worse in large aeas of the city that were considered 'no-go areas' especially after sundown.
At times, living close to some of those areas, one could hear the nightly gunfire and sirens. Weekends were worse.
I like guns but they are only tools as to sometimes 'express yourself' as much as an artist uses a brush...
I love firing on full auto; be it in an urban jungle or a natural one; having lived in both, I came to the conclusion years ago that people should be required to carry guns especially in North America, to both protect themselves and also others if they are attacked or set upon by the roving gangs in many cities.
Having an RPG wouldn't hurt either.grin

Tamarin: As Many know I have connections in the USA...

We tend to like to hire a house in a normal housing complex and live in a regular neighbourhood when we are there....

One time we had hired a house in a nice neighbourhood and the day we arrived the caretaker greeted us with a gun....

We had been given a key by the owner who lived in Belguim...

The female caretaker wondered who was unlocking the door and automatically pulled out a pistol....

There we are stood with two children and cases with this female pointing a gun at us....

When she had left I called a relation quite distressed and he told me that is the normal welcome to the Good Old USA....

No this is not accepatable behaviour and no private household should have guns like this...

Shoot first and ask questions later....

Your society is a sad one if this is normal behaviour....

well come in an other world,it meantlaugh

Hi Zee

A percentage is a percentage.

25% of 300,000.00 is still 25%, like 25% of 80.000.000 is still 25%

Reminds me of the old brain teaser, 'which is heavier, a ton of lead or a ton of feathers.

It is still a ton.

I just wanted to point that out.

Being a teacher and all that...
