BOBANBOBAN: Am learning English, some 6 months, but WTF
does whatever really mines.....something like Am gona ignore you???
Well love me ...Hate me.... but dont ignore me
Whatever This one really bugs me, it comes over as being indifferent or disinterested to what someone has just said, it's rude and a real conversation stopper.
RDM59: What modern day phrases or expressions bug you ? Some of the one's that make me cringe are :-
Awesome
Whatever
Have a nice day
I'm good
Awesome I quite like.
Somebody mentioned dude which I dislike intensely too. However I really only come across it here or speaking to some Americans as it is not commmonly used by Brits.
I really dislike American expressions being used by Brits. They just don´t ring true at all.
I´m glad I live in Spain where they have their own unique terms of expression, not borrowed as the Brits tend to do from the Americans.
However, whether we like it or not,the English language is permanently evolving and developing. New words and expressions are coined and existing words change their meaning as society, culture and technology progress.
I have to keep on top of these changes as an English teacher to non-native speakers, and my guru is Professor David Crystal who is is one of the world's foremost experts on language.

I agree, coming from a British Mum, having a dughter in College in the US, you may imagine the mix up I have.... But as Technology evolves...so does language, and yes, it is quite true that Brits pick up American language, meaning Teenagers, not Adults... Awsome.....right.....
