Never loan money you can't afford to lose. I always think once it's gone, it's gone so never ask for it back.
Most of the time I get it back, but sometimes don't and don't worry about it.

First off, I never loan money without a signature.
Once I have that, I simply leave them a message...
"Hey man, I know it probably just slipped your mind, but you forgot to pay me like you agreed to. If you just forgot, no problem, this is a reminder. If however you deliberately failed to make your payment, can you let me know why? Do you need an extension? I will work with you, but you have to communicate with me."
If it has happened several times, I let him know that the arrangement was not being honored and that I need payment in full by ____ date.
Then if the date arrives and he hasn't paid I file in court.
Fortunately I have only had to file once, but he paid before the court date.

A man who owed my father for some furniture ($300)was way past due! asked if he paid the $300 would he loan him $5oo to buy a truck. My father said sure...but I want to see the truck first! So the three of us went to see the truck and my father agreed it was worth the money....the man paid the $300 and my father wrote the reciept. Then we started getting ready to go....bragging on the truck......the man said,"You can give me the $500 now." my father said, I am not loaning you $500. The man said, "Mr ?.....you lied to me!" My father said,"You lied to get it and I lied to get it back....whats the big deal!" We left! he walked home!

O.k..lets get honest here a bit...people don't forget to pay...they avoid paying.
I'm a firm believer that if I SCREW ANYBODY OVER FOR A PENNY,my higher power,god,it,he,she,whatever YOU WANT TO CALL IT, has a funny way of working.... and I'll somehow get screwed over ten times the amount for what I OWE.
So I avoid owing money to people,and I also believe if someone owes me,and they have and still do,it's on their conscience,but I LEEP LIKE A BABY AT NIGHT,and it's not a drastic amount that will change my life....so.
