I work with special needs kids. We had an incident a few weeks ago and I walked away with a fractured rib. Didn't even realize it at the time. I went to the doctor's as the swelling was ridiculous and I was having a hard time catching my breath. She said that things are only 'addressed' if there is a fracture in more than 3 places. I only had one and my lung was not punctured. So, I am supposed to just wait it out (kind of like a broken toe), but are there any other tips about dealing with this that y'all might have heard of. It hurts like hell and I cannot catch my breath when I am cycling on my bike or trying to sing while teaching our weekly music at school or doing morning circle.

Thanks in advance.

Long time no see wave

My ex has broken his rib three times, actually the very same rib. According to the doctors he consulted, there’s not much to do, but rest, take it easy and wait. But my advance: do X-ray picture after some while, even if your doctor wouldn’t send you to do it, or especially if he/she wouldn’t do it, to be sure that the broken place has properly healed.

If it is a fracture, then aspirin, eating alkaline foods and rest are the only best cures.
If you think its something else, then drink lemonade made with honey, do not use sugar. Avoid sugars in your diet, which also avoid high fructose corn syrup in foods. This will make your body alkaline and healthy since cancer or tumors cannot live in an alkaline body. Or every time you drink water or tea, put a slice of lemon in your drink. (Eat the lemon after too).

There are PH strips you can buy from any drug store that you can measure your PH level with to make sure your body is alkaline.
Should be 7.0 to 7.6 or even to 7.9 for a good alkaline body on the PH level.

There are lists on the Internet for which foods are alkaline and which are not, but also remember that an alkaline body heals 10 times faster than one that is not. Plus viruses and parasites cannot live in an alkaline body either.

Hope you get to feeling better.

Hey Tules, wave Thanks for your input. I was a bit worried and thought I should pursue it further with the docs here, but I always feel like such a wimp (baby, weak) when it comes to the Dutch medical system because they are so much tougher than my fellow Canadians. They take the pain without whining or medication. My doc has accepted though that I am a wimp and will refer me for an x-ray if I request it I am sure. I will do so, just for peace of mind.

I don't think it is because of the lack of smoking. I quit 10 months ago and have gone through all the weirdness associated with quitting already. My cardio system has always been very good even when I was smoking as I do a lot of cardio exercises every day. But I can't even sing now. I am coughing a lot. The pain is also very centralized to the spot where the injury occurred. It usually acts up at the end of a long day. It aches with each breath. It feels like a 'headache' in my rib. Feels good to push on it...

Anyway, will go for more medical testing....

Thanks.

Wow! Thank you. Will definitely try...handshake

(I am a terrible sugar eater. It is a fast 'pick-me-up' in the middle of the day...) Will try though.

Can't sing? That's bad. Try laughing instead laugh

I teach my kids music every Monday, I play the keyboard, I belt out Beatles tunes....and yup, my voice sucks. Sounds like a dawg!! Every now and then one of them will ask me in a voice of innocence 'Miss Gina, what you are doing'.....

I have to whisper back....'I'm singing little one, I'm singing'....

This reminds me of something I once heard
A blonde lady goes the doctors and says to the doctor
"When I push on my rib like this it hurts but when I push on my arm it hurts too and when I push on my leg it hurts too. Why is this doctor?"
The doctor says "that could only mean one thing blonde lady you broke your finger."

Imma, Darl, your whole body is working on repairing the injury ...... just give it time!

It`s not just your rib that is injured ..... your entire system is "injured" .... your rib, your brain, your skin, all the other bones ..... they`re all in sympathy and sending messages like crazy.

The living body is the best pharmacy ever devised. It produces diuretics, painkillers, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, antibiotics, and everyithing manufatured b the drug companies, but it makes them much, much better. The dosage is always right and given on time, side effects are minimal or nonexistent, and the directions for using the drug are included in the drug itself, as part of its built-in intelligence.

The first thing that is killed in the laboratory is the delicate web of intelligence that binds the body together. When a blood cell rushes to a wound site and begins to function, it has not travelled there at random. It actually knows where to go and what to do when it gets there, as surely as a paramedic.... in fact more surely, since it acts completely spontaneously and without guesswork.

So ... Imma .... just relax, think about it ... and your body will do the rest ........

Donta worry girl!bouquet teddybear Pain is just there to remind you to be gentle with your body .....

Hi Imma

If you keep moving that rib, it's never going to heal properly. Imagine a cracked stick... would you glue it up and keep jiggling it around before the glue had set? No! You'd hold it still...

So I think you need a doctor's sick note for at least a week, and REST! No cycling, no work, no singing, no stairmaster, no cardio exercises, in fact no exercise at all... a good balanced diet, lots of sleep, lots of fluids and some prescription painkillers so you can sleep if the pain keeps you awake.

Pain indicates damage. If you move and it hurts, that is because you are damaging yourself. So don't do movements that hurt. Wait for your body to heal.

Oh and last tip - arnica cream is good for bruising, if you're bruised, which it sounds like you might be...

Oh and "The Boat the Rocked" is a great film to watch when you're off sick.

Good better soon
