As you know, I went to Italy (and the U.S.) recently for 4 weeks alltold. To avoid months of guilt-riddled comments from my mother, I told everyone else but my parents. Mind you, I hadn't made the final decision until 4 weeks before due date, but still...not how I like to do things. Anyway, suddenly it was almost time for me to leave, and I still hadn't told my parents, (tho' I know my brothers would have blabbed)mainly because by now, I just felt so embarrassed that I'd left it so late.
So, one evening about a week before I was due to leave, I told them. My mother starts off being dutifully agreeable. I thought, whew, what was I worried about?. Not so. It was short lived.
It went something like this, (translated from Italian)...
Mother: That's nice that you're going to Italy, nothing wrong
with that. It's up to you.(shrugs shoulders...uh, oh!)
Me: Yes, as I said, I wasn't sure until a short time ago that I
was definitely going. I was going to postpone it as I said,
but anyway, I'm going and I'm looking forward to it.
Mother: Only one thing though...
Me: What's that?
Mother: You could have waited til Sebasstian(my son) was
'sistimate'. (usual translation = married off!).
Me: What? Wait til he gets married?
Mother: No, you could have gone after he moved into his own home.
Me: But that's not until March next year! What's the difference?
Mother: He works, and he will come home to an empty
house. No meal ready, and who will do his washing?
Me: Hey, I work, too. No-one does those things for me. He is
perfectly capable. I've just bought a brand new washing
machine. He just presses buttons. And he's nearly 24!
Mother: You are selfish! (she said this in English!)
Me: What? How am I selfish? I'm always working, and I'm the one
who normally does everything.
Mother: He works really long hours. What do you expect?
Me: I work long hours too (I'd have more time if I got off
CS!!!)Besides, when I get back, a week later he is going off
to London and Italy for nearly three weeks! I will be alone
then, and he hasn't a problem with that.
Mother: Silence. She turned her head away and looked towards the
ceiling, and then the wall, as if to say, "What's logic
got to do with this?"
I went home all wound up, and so thankful I had spared myself all these months of having to put up with all that tripe!
Anyway, now I need a strong espresso coffee or two!
What better place, than at my mother's. Better give her a call!
Yer goota love her
