Do you believe that in certain countries people are stereotyped as criminal by law enforcement because of their race? Is a certain type of person more likely to be stopped at an airport or on the roadways and searched? I've heard such terms as 'Driving while Black' and 'Flying while Muslim.'Is a person's race a valid reason for interogating them or simply a form of hysteria? Are these actions justified (based on past experiences) or unlawful(Just because one person acts a certain way does not mean all will) How easy is it to tell one race from another(especially if a person is of mixed descent)and some races do look similar to others? Can there be racial profiling even among people of the same race? Discuss please.

Try being a "Honkie" and going to "The Hood" all alone at night...uh oh

But to answer your question my dear, YES it does exist.sigh Now while I agree that driving while black is rather ridiculous, I am not really sure about the flying part. I guess at 35,000 feet I would rather feel safe..dunno (Given the way things appear to be these days)...

I was always being pulled in my red sports car.

My friends father was in the local police and he told me all the cops had my number and were just waiting to pounce, so drive carefully.

This was more of a jealousy thing than anything else, though.

I have to be honest Taino, it does exist to some extent even by police of same race, I will try to explain as best I can. As a former P.O.(NYPD) you inevitably become cynical as far as not trusting anyone and depends on neighborhood, time of day etc. I'm sure their are cops who will stereotype more than others. I can only speak for NYC but it is a good example for the diversity. There are precincts where a certain nationality dominates the populus. It's unfortunate but it is reality and until you walk in those shoes, even the most liberal P.O. will be on guard(nature of the beast).hug wine

There are a lot of questions in you thread!
Yes, in some european countries, certain type of person are more likely to be interogated. Not only because of the colour of their skin, but because the way they walk, how they dress, how they talk, how much agressiveness and arrogance they show, ... It's justified by the fact that 9 time out of 10, this type of person did some if not many criminal acts. Of course this can lead to interogating a perfectly innocent person.
It isn't always easy to tell one race from another but some persons are "typical". Racial profiling is easier among people of the same race. If we, caucasians, think all black people look alike, Africans can recognise a Hutu from a Tutsie. And I can see a difference between a Portuguese and a Sweedish person. For Asian people, we all are "long noses".

"Honkie"? wow Wow I haven't heard that term since the 70's. Do people still use that word? Well I guess its no worse than driving about in a rich white suburb and being a "Darkie"?dunno I remember when 9/11 occured a friend of mine was afraid to fly to the States, she had heard all kinds of horror stories at the airports, her last name happened to be Mohammed, her mom was Jamaican and her dad was from Trinidad and they were Christians but if you looked at her you would probably think she was Middle Eastern - which she wasn't, just a typical Trini.dunno

When I was living in Sanfansisco I went into the corner store and asked for a 'honkie', the guy behind the counter look oddly at me ask asked me to repeat myself........so thinking it was just my Irish accent I repeated myself, 'May I have a Honkie Please' and pointed to the freezer............he burst out laughing and I stood there not knowing what was so funny, I didnt know what honkie ment. To me in my local town in Ireland, honkie means an Ice cream......so lets say I was a little embarrased.

It's easy to profile any minority. Everyone stands out in a crowd depending on where they live. i.e. being a person of color living in a white community or a white person living in a community of Indians. The problem is, no one is interested in learning about the person as a unique individual. It's easier to sterotype a stranger and say they're all the same.
