Ok so I got my body fat tested today and it says I am 23% body fat. I weigh 190 lbs so that is the equivalent of 43 lbs of fat. Let's say I should have 10% body fat to remain healthy, leaving 13% to lose : 24.7 lbs.

I am educated on how to lose fat and gain muscle but I am curious of your opinions. Should I focus first on just working out a lot, eating a lot and building more muscle mass for a few weeks. Then switch over to doing a lot of aerobic activity and eating less to burn away the fat and tone up.

Or ..

Should I do the opposite.. lose the fat then build the muscle?

I am trying to gain muscle mass in my chest and legs especially but lose the small spare tire I'm accumulating around my mid section. So which would you recommend first?

Do both aerobic and weight training. Lifting weights actually helps in burning fat. Eat more protein and cut down on carbs.

Best of luck to you....handshake

You´re right, but there is so much conflicting advice nowadays. I teach doctors mainly, and most of my friends are doctors too. The consensus as far as I can see is that carbs are the problem.

That´s simplistic I know and it depends on the individual, but I have a new student who is one of the leading experts in diabetes in Europe and he has devised an eating plan which has proved to be extremely successful in 50% of his diabetic patients, so successful that they no longer have to take drugs because they have lost sufficient weight and no longer need them.

Go on a diet and do aerobics, lose the weight first of course and only then build muscles.

So true...carbs are a killer. I am a diabetic and have cut way down on carbs. But if you do eat carbs you must accompany them with protein. The stomach breaks down protein very slow and that stops the carbs absorbing into your system too fast which spikes blood sugar levels. But the key is to limit carbs as much as possible.

Hi Ken. wave I´m not convinced of that. Some doctors here swear by the protein only, or not mixing carbs with protein. Something to do with the lipids. I´ve had it explained to me because I´m always afraid I may develop diabetes as my mum developed it when she was in her early forties, younger than me.

My recent blood analysis showed everything was normal including the glucose levels, so I´m continuing with my haphazard, but with one eye on the sugar levels, eating habits for the moment. laugh

1st i have been doing this for years , 10 % is great for athletes i would aim for 15-21 % body fat , but if you fill you need to kill your self , i would keep my protein levels at about 270 gr a day thats about 1 1/2 per lbs . and up my aerobic activity to about 1 hour a day 5 times a week and make sure you drink a half a gallon of water a day good luck player .

I don't see why losing the fat before building muscle does you any good.

I mean, I don't see why it does you any better than doing it the opposite way.

Aerobic training is always good.

Weight training will help you build muscle, which will help you lose fat.

It's more of an image question.. should I have no muscles, tone up and then build my muscle or should I build muscle while being flabby and then tone it up .. they both reach the same result its just a matter of personal opinion.. I'm trying to see which way you guys would choose.

Agree - But of course, he won't necessarily lose any weight as muscle is heavier than fat!

You want to build lean hard muscle while losing fat and that is done by working out with moderate heavy weights and/or resistance. Not to low of reps, maybe 9-12..3 sets. Diet wise you should check on line at bodybuilding.com or related fitness site to see what your protein intake should be for your weight and workout schedule. There are good carbs and bad carbs. Obviously you don't want to eat chocolate bars for carbs. You do need carbs for energy though especially when working out, just don't over do it. Good luck.flex
