GingerBe: I'd tend to leave it alone. Time cures all things. As people respond, others will notice if their over-all intentions are good or not, and from that it will help them interpret future posts without basically changing anything, because they have a better understanding of the person behind the posts.

My views on people here are determined, not by what they say, but by their reactions to what others say.
I think we all do this ...don't we?

first that may be very hard for some that Englis is not thier first lag.
Then "communicate" in what they KNOW, instead
of trying to pretend something else..

and seems somewhat unfair to me...
Life is unfair.. DEAL with it..!!professor

the second part....I disagree I think it falls on both partys to understand things as it is intended... it IS NOT..
check your English usage.. ( I cannot speak for other languages)doh :

third part....seeing poster as "chuckle-heads" is part of the problem I would think....I just call em like I see em..
and I did STATE it is: " my OPINION"..dunno :

fourth part.... It does greatly....
I say..dunno

Thanks for posting as your opinion does have value even if we all do not see things in the same light ...
And thank you..handshake as I feel (KNOW) that
I get MY thought. idea. opinion, etc.
across quite plainly, correctly and with
all the proper meanings, nuances, etc. directed
and delivered as crafted and desired..

The spelling police drive me nuts frustrated

I'd like to see them spell as well in another language as some of our non English speaking friends do here

I also think that the ones who cause arguments come here to deliberately look for them., They will nit pic at posts until they justify themselves that they can make an argument out of it.

We all know someone personally who is like that I'm sure doh

davpk10: This is a tricky thing I think here. How often are we misunderstood in our posts? Seems to happen a lot and an arguement ensues. I do not beleive we intend for an arguement to start ,but we have all found ourselves in this I think.

I find it hard to think that we as a group want to argue (well maybe one or two)Now I am not talking about a good old heated debate..but a real arguement.

I think that some mid-eastern and eastern posters are misunderstood the most and I can understand this happening....But with the western cultures you would think it would be less.

Is it that cultures are just differant so we take posts differantly?....Do we not read the post the same way? ...Does the poster not express themselves well? (I feel this is my case alot) and does the reader of a post only take out of it as they wish to and not really try to think what it is the poster is saying and then post before really understanding the other poster?

Now the big questions.

As a group what can we do to lessen this from happening?

Do we as a group want to?

I am genuinely interested it all that wish to express how they feel.

I believe all your suppositions are correct in various situations. I also believe that people that have been on CS forums for a while know each other, respect each other and know who the known trouble makers are. Being said that, where I am hinting is that I do not usually think the worst about someone I know, but I do get annoyed when my posts are taken the wrong way or misunderstood by newbies.

Not sure there's something that we can do about that as a group, except for these few:
1. start some English lessons
2. take a deep breath
3. group therapy

And you do a very good job of it too. I find your level of English to be very good, far better than one or two of your countrymen.

webtranslation.paralink.com,
and many others like these would help. If a person has time to spend online, could very well improve their English. I am not a native English speaker either, but I strongly believe that life is a learning process wink

SoldierByte: Big..??
difficult..??
It's SIMPLE...
LEARN to communicate CORRECTLY grammatically,
with PROPER usage, spelling, and at an adult level
in WHATever language you choose..
It IS the duty of the POSTER
to get THEIR thought, idea, etc across to the reader..
NOT the reader's job to try and decipher whatever
some chuckle-head pecks out onto a forum..
Just MY opinion..
your's may vary...
---SoldierByte---

Well, for me, this is a good example of possible misunderstanding.
Are you saying, I would be allowed to post here in French, provided that my grammar, spelling and level of intelligence are correct.

True ...but you must agree that a second lag. may come much easier for some than for others...I am one of them ...I took two years of French in school and failed two years of French....I would also say that I barely passed English for four years....and there are ones that do and have used these forums to improve thier English ....I believe Boban is one that did this....but the idea of this thread is to discuss the reasons for arguement and perhaps find a way to see less of them ....or perhaps not.....I would like to see less fighting and more good topics up for adult debate....handshake wine

I am an English Professor, and so I have a natural love for the English language, but as a foreign teacher I fully understand the difficulties that non English speakers can have when posting. That said, because I take pride in my language and because I tend to write exactly what I would speak face to face, I often get accused of being pompous or snobbish, water off a ducks back to me, but I have noticed that these comments usually come from those who , lets say, appear, to be less well educated.
I don't believe I am confrontational, however, I will have my say when I see something that to my mind is wrong, I realise that my opinion is just that, MY opinion and that others will disagree, but enjoy a debate, debates though, should end up either by changing someone's original belief or agreeing to disagree, on CS, however, they seem to end up getting deleted and posters sent to Jail laugh laugh
