I really have no clue why I am posting this. Maybe it's to see if anyone else has had this experience. I was home for a week recently. I left a few nights ago to return up to Orlando to get my trailer and head back on the road. It had been raining hard for a few days and it was raining when I left.

For those who don't know me or are new here, I drive a 2006 Volvo over the road truck. Anyway, I was running bobtail (no trailer) up I-75. I moved to the left lane or (hammer lane) as wel call it, to pass a car. As I turned the wheel, my rear axles hit a puddle of water and the rear of the truck slid out. I continued to correct as the rear of the rig slid from right to left. As it slid for the 2nd time to the right, the tires grabbed and shot me into the median. Managed to tear the truck up pretty good but I kept it upright and got it stopped in the median.

Florida highway patrol showed up and while the wrecker was pulling my truck out, I literally fell apart.

Anyway, my issue is my thoughts. During all of this, I had thoughts of my kids and family. Even of my ex to be. Anyone else had this before? I thought that was always a pre death thing. Guess I was wrong.

Yes, I've seen an 18 wheeler flying toward the back of my vehicle at a good 70ish mph with 5" of snow down, having ice on the bridge - traffic was stopped, I thought I was over with, it had a trailer and was fully loaded. He ended up rolling the truck in the median, and part of the cargo went flying into the traffic heading the opposite direction. Things unforeseen, but can easily change things in the blink of an eye.

TruckerLuv, Glad to see you back and safe. As I have traveled
more miles than I care to remember, as I am sure you know,
I have had many close calls. But I guess my experience is more
with my dreams. This is a true story and sometimes difficult
to talk about. I used to have dreams often about one of my
kids dying. I would always have to go check to make sure they
were all OK. Well in '92 my daughter was killed in a car accident
on her way to school, 11 days away from her 17th birthday.
I have never had a dream since then about the death of one of
my kids. I truly believe that was God's way of trying to prepare
me in a small way.
You take care and my prayers for your safety will go on me daily
list.hug hug

My children and I were involved in a head-on collision in July and similarily I had all these thoughts and more...only after the accident! That was because we were totally taken by surpsise as the accident happened on a blind corner and we never saw it coming!!!!!

Fortunately we were not injured badly, however my thoughts and emotions immediately went to what could have been...as it was a very serious accident!!!!! It could have and should have been much worse according to the police officer at the scene of the accident, but fortunately we were all wearing seatbelts and that probably is what saved our lives!!!!!

I was an emotional wreck just thinking about one or both of my children being severly injured or worse...and it certainly made us all apprectiate one another and all the people we have in our lives much much more!!!!!

I think it's normal to reflect this way when one has a close call with death and sometimes it can also be a wake up call!!!!!!!

I was a 911 operator for awhile in Denver, no I wasnt IN a car and then broke down after nut I had people on the phone with me die and I had to hold it together for them or their loved ones and then when EMS showed up I could hang up..
I remember getting a call from a frantic mother whos daughter ( 1) wasnt breathing had basically hung herself on the cords to a toy..I talked to her told her exactly what to do.. EMS arrived and I hung up.. Looked at my boss that was listening in on the phone call , picked up my purse and went home and hugged my kids.. Cried all the way...

Its instinct tot get thru it and then let the meltdown happen...Im glad youre ok

Definitely puts things into perspective.. if I had a choice, I would have got the hell away, but in bumper-to-bumper traffic during snow/ice conditions... you can't do much but hold on for the ride.

I do believe a few of us on the forums have, it's something that you'll never ever forget, either. You can try to displace it, but it'll be quite difficult. It's just like those who remember where they were and what they were doing when Kennedy got shot, and the Challenger explosion.

I too have had a few brushes with death,I live each day as if it where my last, with no regrett, and no unfinished buisness.
The tradedy of life is not that it ends so soon, but that we wait to long to begin it.

I drove OTR for 6 years. The worst incident was in Nebraska. Middle of January and suddenly the roads iced over. Up ahead of me there was a car in the median, and seeing this I naturally started slowing down, in case this vehicle tried to pull out. However, the traffic in front of me saw the same thing and began slamming on their brakes. Next thing I know, my 80,000 lb truck is gaining way too fast on these cars that are practically stopped on the road in front of me, blocking both lanes and the right shoulder. Obviously I had nowhere to go, and knowing that the last thing I should do was to hit my brakes too hard, I really had no choice, other than turn right and ditch the truck ( which I was a split second from deciding to do ), possibly killing myself and maybe someone else. I did manage to get slowed down enough to avoid hitting anyone or wrecking the truck ( not sure how many almost-jackknifes I went through ), and ended up stopping at the next exit to get out and calm my nerves.

The only thing that went through my mind at the time was that I was going to wipe out a few vehicles no matter what I did, that someone on this road was going to get killed by this 40 ton truck that I was in control of. I didn't think about my family, kids, or home; all my mind kept seeing was my rig plowing through these people ahead of me.

Trucker, I'm glad to hear that you came through it OK.

A lot of people have no clue as to what is involved in driving a tractor trailer. My oldest daughters went on the road with me before getting a drivers license, and I think it has really helped them be more safety conscience around larger vehicles. If anyone ever has the opportunity, take a ride in an 18 wheeler; you'll see the road in an entirely different perspective.

TruckerLuv...I used to do over-the -road too. One
Winter I was sent up I-81 to Wilkes Barre, PA after
a heavy snowfall; in fact the highway hadn't even been
plowed yet, and the secondary roads were terrible! I
went to make a turn into the industrial complex and
looked into my right mirror just in time to see my trailer
headed towards my cab! I gave it enough of a 'goose' to
pull it out of the jack-knife, and was okay but that's
a damn scary feeling to know that 20,000 lbs. are
headed straight for ya! I wasn't afraid of dying though...
I was afraid I'd wreck the rig! wow

Missy I was also a 911 emergencey operator...and especially the calls that involved children caused me to break down every time...during the call my tone of voice never changed though..but afterwards...

In the end i gave up the job because of all the children i could not help...

As for the trucker...yes in those moments you are going to think of the people you most love and care for...and even though she is your soon to be ex..there was a love there at one time...and the mother of your children...your lives are forever intertwined...it just shows your character....

I had something happen in '03. I was working at the end of my driveway when a drunk driver swerved over and hit me and kept driving. I could only regain focus to see it was a lt. blue car. thank god there was a witness. The whole time I was laying there I thought about my daughter and family. I now view life in general with a whole new respect. Things must happen for a reason. Kevin

As a nurse i can tell the intial reaction is the adrenaline and your body moving into "fight or Flight mode" shunting a mass of blood only to the most vital things needed to get you out of the situation...ie your brain, your heart and the muscles in your legs (hence "flight".... when it regains it's equalibrium all that adrenaline is used up and you are left with the mushy legs, and the emotional rush.

My sister was one of the unlucky one that did not make it out of her wreck, she fell asleep at the wheel, got thrown from the vehicle, the vehicle flipped on her, and dragged her about 50 ft. (this was over by Denver in Dec 01) i was not there but i can tell you that same fight or flight feeling kicked in when the officers came to my door and told me about it...i will always be grateful that when i sent her on her way the night before that things were "right" between us, and i got the chance to hug her and say i love you....gives me peace. Made a difference in my life now w/ my daughter, no angry words, more than enough hugs & i love yous when parting...makes you a gentler person.

For the gentleman who started this thread you mentioned thinking about your ex, maybe there are some things that need still to be said???

Although i "know" none of you, really, I am soooo grateful, for all of you that have been in accidents, that you are all here today to tell your stories.

kiss to you all

J
