sebomaster: yes, gladiators fights are a cool experience. i experienced some medieval fight and i discovered in it something really different ;)
i practice penchak silat (harimau style)it is really near of the jiu jitsu in the approach of the ground combat ;)
nice to meet you partner, maybe we can do some sparrinf someday ;)
Nice to meet you too mate
I've never seen penchak silat techniques, so it would be a great experience to learn more about it :) Do you also practice with weapons? If I'm not mistaken, the kris is a weapon associated with this martial art isn't it? :)
Re-the gladiators, after being used to the katana, I found the gladius' short range a very different experience to wield, you really have to see your opponent's white of the eyes so to speak. Having a shield also makes it easier on defence, as well as it being a very good offensive weapon in itself. No wonder modern day riot police still use what is in effect a modern version of the Roman scutum
jonnt: Little old city i live in , you dont take on a man with a shotgun ,,you take him on then iff he thinks your worth it after he loses he comes back with a shotgun ,,am not making jokes ..
Police in liverpool have in the last 6 yrs got things under control and have zero tollerence for trouble be it with or without guns .
Even door staff to protect themselves have even been re trained in diplomacy because others know there not always with friends ..
Best just to buy a guitar and sing songs iff some will let yea
Don't worry no sane martial arts teacher will teach you to go head to head with a guy with a firearm unless you really have NO other option.
My earlier post was just a knee jerk reaction to what sadly is a typical attitude from people who have never done martial arts in their life.
I get the similar comments from people who've never practiced sports in their life, and who will just say 'why do you work out at the gym and eat healthy, you're still going to die one day you know?'
I will really never be able to understand such an attitude (nor do I really have any desire to for that matter)
My son took up Aikido when he was younger and I went to all his practices. I was extremely impressed with his Sensei. After years in this art, he had developed a calm maturity that was most alluring. Too bad he was married....
Martial arts is not just about being able to beat people up. It teaches you to have greater awareness of your body and mind; it's a good exercise to stay healthy and your body flexible even as you age; and teaches one self discipline.
Besides, how many times are you going to have to fight vs. someone with a shotgun? We're not in the Wild West you know.
Malta might not be the wild west; but, where I come from you're more likely to see a gun, than a martial artist. Gun battles with AK-47s, and Uzis, are very common; have you ever huddled on the bottom of your vehicle, while people hide behind it, in the middle of a machine gun shootout?
And, you should see some of the subdivisions in Hawaii. There's miles of rough rocky roads between you and the police. Guns are common in the sub-divisions, and so are lime pits; where your bones disappear.
One guy recently got drug behind a truck, until he was spread out for miles.
All that being said, I practice martial arts for physical rehabilitation from being thrown through the window of a car. My dad signed me up for Kempo Karate, when I was 4, so it's been in my life for along time.
My dad practiced martial arts all of his life; and, he taught me to treat everybody with respect, like they have a loaded gun.
Martial arts are good exercise; but you never know when the wild west will appear on your doorstep.

I think keeping yourself healthy has got to be a good thing . On the other side as many die keeping themselves healthy as dont ,well maybe not as many who do ..
Wont droan on ,but what i said earlier about liverpool ,, was true , was becoming like the wild west up untill the police got pro active ,a shooting a week ,big for the u.k.

Where I come from, if somebody tells you they're coming back with a gun, you don't let them leave in good enough shape to use it.
Jaygo1: I had never heard that Hawaii was so dangerous. Is this true???
You've never heard of Punatics?
Yes, we have very dangerous subdivisions.
Not that long ago, a bunch of guys from San Quentin Prison in California, got together and bought up land in a remote subdivision. They started a major industry in growing weed, and making speed. They burned out their neighbors, and bought up their land, I have two different friends that moved because of it.
They kicked in my friend's front door in the middle of the night, with guns, to rob him for a male calico cat!

I've already been shot two different times.
F.T.W. If someone threatens to come back at me with a gun, they are in danger.
One guy was yelling at me in the dark... You're breaking my arm!

No, I've never heard of Punatics. Why do we on the mainland never hear of all the crime there? All I ever hear of Hawaii is what a tropical paradise it is.
I have friends that are going there in just a couple weeks, but I doubt they'll be anywhere near these subdivisions.
