I went to the Bristol Renaissance Faire yesterday. July 2010. It was awesome. There were a lot less people in the faire than there used to be. They relaxed costume rules a little bit. I saw a lot of striped socks. I also saw some Victorian Steampunk Scottish dancing wenches with a killer band called Tartanic. When I was younger and in the faire, it was a much bigger deal. it seems like a lot of the vendors were A) driven out by rising booth prices and B) probably set up shop for a fraction of the cost on the net. The joust was mostly replaced by stuff like dancing horses (I swear) and some weird gladiator thing with kids.

Does anybody else go to Ren Faires? Where? What's it like? How good are the costumes? Do you meet CS people there?

What's a villset? You could probably turn Flint into a Ren Faire. Zillions of empty little pastel houses. Yes, I am a Michael Moore fan.

Hey Witchay,

I've been to the Minnesota Ren Fest- Seriously H-U-G-E and the Texas Ren Fest. I'm a big Rennie fan and have a gypsy like costume that I wear. :-D I have naturally auburn wavy hair and at the Scarborough Ren Fest an executioner took to following me all over the grounds. I wasn't sure if it was my hair that caught his eye or if he wanted my head. laugh

I've seen Tartanic a couple of times and really like them. Another popular band is The Killdares. I taught myself to play the chanter.

Penn and Teller used to be involved with the Minn Ren Faire somehow. Also, allegedly, Joel Hodgson who did Mystery Science Theater 3000. The Minn ren Faire was on TV one time and it looked like they were way into historical accuracy. Bristol was for a time but they're way looser now. The Killdares were good. I looked at the Texas Faire 2010 on You Tube and it looked really cool. One thing I don't get is that it seems like it would be boiling hot in Texas. Or do they have it in winter? I have never experienced Texas heat. The hottest I ever had it was a few short visits to Vegas. Imagine a Vegas Ren Faire. That would be funny. I can't even begin to imagine how people from Vegas would butcher a Ren Faire. Hehe. Maybe it would be good. A lot of good looking people and costume designers live there.

I had hear that Penn and Teller used to be involved, but I'd never seen them when I lived there and went.I lived there for 8 1/2 years. Puke and Snot are hilarious and I've seen them at both the Minn Ren Fest and at the Texas Ren Fest. :-D Minn Ren Fest is definitely into historical accuracy. I just saw The Killdares in concert at the Granada Theater last night for the filming of their dvd. I'm in the front row. grin We had a blast! yay

Scarborough takes place April through Memorial Day weekend before it gets hot. Texas Ren Fest goes on in October- November when the days are comfortable and the nights start getting cool. :-) We've got the Celtic Heritage Festival coming up in September and the Scottish Festival is in early June. :-)Where I live it can be awfully hot and humid. I was raised in El Paso, Texas which is that hot, dry desert heat like Vegas. Give me dry heat any day. The hot humid stuff is positively wilting.

I have a picture of a Vegas Ren Faire of Henry VIII in a short fur cloak with shorts. laugh You're right- they'd likely butcher it dreadfully. laugh It'd probably be wild and fun, though. :-D

I make and sell costumes. Lately, sales have been dismal. I finally found out that there's a reason. I went to the faire and there were only a small fraction of the people who used to be there. That goes for patrons and participants. There used to be huge lines for the bathrooms. Not any more. The streets used to be jammed. No more. I think they should have a shuttle from the Kenosha train stat1ion that goes around and around nonstop. It would take a while for the word to get out, but I think eventually the shuttle would be crammed. Meh.

I've been several times. Unlike most Ren-Faires, SCA events span a few days, and are like period camping trips with both Daytime & Night-time activities. War College during the day (combat practice and tournies) along with tech presentations (everything from needle-point to blacksmithing) and merchant booths.

At night there are big parties with period music, Tablero tournaments, and period plays put on by thespians in period costumes.

That's just the public events. Certain clans also have clan feasts, tournies, and political honor presentations as leadership and stewardship of various clan activities are decided or change hands.

Altogether SCA events are superior to any Ren-faire I've ever been to. For a few days its actually like living in the period.

At least IMO.
