Watched 2 movies back to back today.

I am Legend
and
The Book of Eli.

Just realised that the both have quite heavy religious themes. (Ok, not so much in "I am Legend", but the end kinda says everything happens for a reason).

I don't want to start a discussion about religion in general, cause that will lead nowhere good, but do you think "God is looking after you" kind of ruins the storyline somewhat?

I think that it can just be lazy storytelling, just trying to appeal to a certain type of audience.

That's what I was thinking.

I don't actually have a problem with Religious movies per se. When "The Passion of the Christ" came out, I could either choose to see it or not.
I am Legend bugged me cause throwing in "everything happens for a reason" and the end of a movie is like saying "it was all a dream"

The Book of Eli irked me a bit cause I had no idea it was about religion and it was a bit like preaching at someone who's not religious in a closed room. Like i didn't have a choice whether or not to watch it.
(Now I know someone's gonna say that I had a choice to turn it off) but the storyline wasn't that bad. It just got me thinking.

Well, hey. I have no problem with people who believe that. More power to you, it must be a tremendous source of comfort to have that kind of faith. My own mother works as a parish administrator and that's fine.
We each believe what we want. But I believe that everyone should have a choice about whether they want to have religion in their lives or not.
I was trying to go for a different point though. I just think "God did it" is a lame ending to a movie.

thats what it all comes down to in the the end choice.
iam not in to all the religion stuff and its practices
just a personal relationship with jesus. many believe there are
many ways to god thats their choice. thats why theres so much
new age beliefs in the world today trying to make a connection
with GOD. the christian belief is there is only one way through
jesus through faith in him. i guess it a personal desion for
all of us end the end. and freedom to choese.

And I think Alpha would just like the personal choice to watch something other than a coded religious film.

But they are actually everywhere from Twilight to The Chronicles of Narnia. Both those were written with overt religious messages. That is what irks me, trying to sneak in a message into films for younger people.

btw I am not saying anything against people that want to be religious, more about films with a religious subtext aimed at children and teens.

Yep! Cheers.
Have no problem with religion in movies but just don't pretend it's something else.
This is an extreme example and I'll probably get slated for saying it but it'd be like sneaking scenes from "Hostel" into "Pretty woman". I've no problem with people who want to watch either of those movies but I'm sure no-one would appreciate it being thrown at them whan they thought it was something else.

Of course you're 'wanted' there, but the final choice is yours alone - it's called "Free Will"frustrated laugh

I'd say a few might have wanted to see Richard Gere get a few slaps rolling on the floor laughing But yes that is it exactly, somethings do not belong in certain movies. Especially something so personal as religion.

Spirituality I can deal with in a film, but not something that is there to promote a particular organised religion. I know that is slightly away from the original point.

Actually, out of everyone, you're the closest to my original point. laugh

I don't mean to get into a conversation about whether or not God love me or whatever, just about sneaking it into movies.

I think sneaking any hidden message into a film is just wrong. Religious or otherwise

Unless that hidden message is eat well and exercise laugh

But ulterior motives a rarely a good thing.
