As some of you may be aware the ex Prime Minister of the U.K. is donating the royalties of his book to help the war wounded via the British Legion.Doesn't it mean that we now have to go out and buy the said book to boost the cophers.

What is your take on this "grand " gesture.

bestbefore: In my humble opinion any money towards helping the war wounded and their rehabilitation is long overdue.Where it comes from is immaterial, so leave the politics out of it.

I say fair play to the man. And given you have posted this in the Current Events & Politics area of CS, plus the fact Tony Blair was once Prime Minister of the UK, I would say keeping politics out of it, will not quite happen somehow.

ChasingCars: It's the least he should do. He should do more.

He should also be tried and not allowed to get off scot-free for misleading parliament to take the country into the Iraq war.

Nothing can be done until the Chilcott Inquiry is published.

The Chilcott Inquiry is not a court of law and the members of the Committee are not judges, and nobody is on trial. But if the Committee finds that mistakes were made, that there were issues which could have been dealt with better, it will say so.

However....do I believe he should be taken to court? NO I don't.

The man is a proven liar. He mislead parliament. He needs to be held accountable for that. However British justice is not consistent - so cheats & liars Aitken and Archer get done - perjurer Major gets off by paying back Private Eye the £1M he perjured himself to sue them for. I think it is good that Blair is donating royalties, but part of me questions whether it is an act of altruistic generosity or whether he has an ulterior PR motive.

Tony Blair was told he had "blood on his hands" by Peter Brierley, left, the father of Lance Cpl. Shaun Brierley, who was killed in March 2003 Photo: PA Mr Blair, who has repeatedly defended his decision to lead Britain into the conflict, was rebuked by Mr Brierley at a reception for guests who attended a commemoration service marking the end of the Iraq campaign and honouring the 179 British personnel who died during the six-year conflict.

Mr Brierley refused to shake Mr Blair's outstretched hand at the event staged at the Guildhall in the City and told the politician: "I'm not shaking your hand, you've got blood on it."
Tony Blair is a money grabbing lowlife who is directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of men, women, and children. He should be arrested for warcrimes

Shock and horror..a politician that misleads lol.

CC..I KNOW what you are saying my friend. Maybe Baroness Thatcher should be charged with murder of the 300+ lives in sinking of the Belgrano when she (the ship) was outside the exclusion zone?

However...I care not one iota what Blair's motive is. I, as an ex soldier of 25 years, am just as pleased as punch that he had donated (or is donating) the royalties to this cause.

100% agree with that -

Further - He is doing this for one thing and it is so transparent. He has been angling for a Nobel prize by posturing for years and this donation from his book is a concsience and image thing which, like him, is NOT genuine. What many troops at the front end really think of B liar esquire, the whole New Lie bore government, Brown and indeed UK politicians of all persuasions was and still is unprintable, especially with what was allowed to happen over the wrong, inadequate and unsuitable equipment and supplies issues, and that has been said at all levels.

The British Legion will accept it with public grace but I know behind the scenes there will be many other ex Navy, RAF and Army members who see through the insincerity and do not like it.

Not this one and I doubt that any ex or current forces member with the need for help will either.

Glad to see these folks getting a little of what they deserve....but let me ask and really I don't know..but have wonder about other things that get promoted in this fashion...

Him stating that the money for these books goto the vets could be just a way to sell the books and land him on the best sellers list ...so is he doing this for the vets or himself...handshake

I know where you are coming from on this Steve and your view that the money will be welcomed and well used I share - and from that standpoint - money is money.

But lets not lose sight of whom the donor is - Blair donating to a Forces charity is like a donation from Ian Huntley to Save The Children.

Policitians never do anything with an ulterior motive, anymore than pop stars promote famines in Africa.

However, I dont care why he is doing it; just that he is. It can do nothing but good, I hope.

I think its scandalous that vets in some of the richest countries in the world still have to rely heavily on hand-outs.

And if every other high profile political figure from all the other parties did the same thing, and TB didnt, Im sure he'd be wrong then, too.

Yes, I believe he did...although we don't use the same term as you use in 'programs', financial aid was given for rehab...but as normal, it's never enough.
