invinciblemuse: You know, this kind of response makes me wonder - maybe there should be a US forum, so people, who won't accept the opinions of those who live elsewhere, have their own platform...

I live "elsewhere". Does that give me the right to make an opinion about YOU? (such as "you don't know what you're talking about"?) Particularly if said opinion is issued by someone that has no personal knowledge of what they're accusing you of "knowing nothing about"?

If, instead of a personal attack about what I did or didn't know, the braintrust who made that remark had put forward facts, ideas or rational points of argument I would have had no reason to rebut the ad hominem fallacy and state the obvious (never having been in this country puts no one in a position to accuse someone here of not knowing what they're talking about in regard to local issues). Disagree. Dissent. Offer an opinion.

Make it personal and surprise, surprise.... it's PERSONAL.

Your closed brain isn't even worth my time now trying to show you what is really going on..cause you will continue to twist it to make fit what is in your head.

Well the whole point was you were stating the main numbers for just mentally ill, Wrong the main numbers now is families..
Also I seriously think you didn't read more than one sentence out of both those articles.

Please can you explain "an off topic agenda"?

You where asked "who attacked" by someone who is very familiar to you... no reply.
Speaks volumes about a genuine debater,do you not think?

This is not always true even for repeat offenders. They just give a little tap on the wrist and send them out with an ankle monitor on because they have no room.

What?? Okay, now I'm totally confused. Or, maybe you are?

Your profile says 'Stratford, Connecticut USA', doesn't it? I was supporting the idea of a US forum, so correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought 'Stratford, Connecticut USA' is actually in the US??

You're free to have an opinion about me, I'm the last person to restrict you. If you think I don't know what I'm talking about, you're free to say so. The only thing is - you posted a thread on an International Forum, and by that you were basically inviting people from all over the world to voice their opinion. That's what I did, nothing else.

I'm not aware that I made a personal attack on you. I had no intention of doing so, if it's perceived that way, there's nothing I can do about that. I didn't mean to upset you by merely stating my opinion. Yes, I did offer my opinion - if I wanted to get personal, I'd put in a quip about "poor reading comprehension, apparently".

Let's just agree that we disagree. Have some flowers: bouquet

Peace to all, over and out!

From what I have read so far, you seem to assume that people living outside the US don't, or can't, know anything about poverty there.

This is a wrong assumption.

You made reference to the fact that if you were asked to comment on poverty in Greece, I think you said, (somewhere in Europe), that you would not know, or presume to know, anything about it.

That is no one's fault but your own.

In Europe, we tend to make it our business to find out about other countries, almost everything about them in fact. It is part of who we are. For many, it is an endless thirst for knowledge. We read voraciously, and scour the media and internet, for information on what the rest of the world is doing.

I may be wrong here, (but don't think so), that many people in the States don't do a lot of research on countries outside of the US.

This may be the case for you personally, with you assuming that people here do as you do, and don't bother finding out what the rest of the world is doing, and how it might affect you.

You'd be making wrong assumptions if that is the case.

I have lived and worked with the poor and homeless in a few countries, 3rd world, and European, including this one, and have talked extensively with homeless street people in 6 of the 7 states I have visited in America, and I can tell you without hesitation that there is no difference in being poor there and being poor in Europe.

You don't have specific problems there that we don't have here.

The main causes of poverty and homelessness there are the same causes here. As people tried to explain to you earlier, poverty and it's problems and causes are a common global phenomenon.wine

Ok, I've just seen your comment a couple of posts above my last one and I now know what you are going on about.

You are trying to get me into a personal argument on a public forum, which I believe is against the rules, not to mention off topic.

I also feel that I can comment, or not comment on this thread as I see fit.

I do not feel obliged to justify my comments, or lack of them to you about a third party, but I will a little, seeing as you feel so strongly about this.

I have offered to resolve differences with the third party you have implicated in an ecard sent on the 28th August, but this offer was not taken up.

My comment regarding hostility was referring to a number of posters, only one of them have I had issues with.

Now, I suggest you drop this, sir, as its none of your business.

I dont think this is necessary...i think he is referring to the fact you ignore me or bypass me like the plague.
As for your ecard..thank you, it was wonderful to receive this from you after so many unanswered mail.
I did respond to you if you remember rightly....but i wont go into what i received back!
Now if we could take this off the board?
I dont see why you could not have mailed this to TB??
Have a wonderful evening all.xxx

For some reason your post made me think of my (actually very very good) four years living in California. Dress, attitude are casual, friendships are quickly developed and are extremely warm, a genuine "come on over to the Bar B Q, bring your swimsuit, heck, stay the night in the Rec. room. Need a shoulder to cry on?.......see ya...... cool

It's still a wonderful place. But you know, I believe you take your happy or your pretty or your ugly or your sad with you where ever you go, and if you are creative and loving you carve out a good life. Some of the neatest people I have ever known were military folks on the move. They blended in, and had many, many friends. Oregon is my number one, probably because of the beach, and it's home.hug

I have been to most US states, but I have never been to Oregon or Washington. Someday, not too far into the future, I need to do something about that!

It's been lots of fun arguing about who's the foremost authority on homelessness in America (apparently it's Europeans based on sheer numbers of responses, if not empirical data, LOL).

So after all has been said and all angles heard from is there still anyone that disputes that if you are starving to death or facing freezing to death that walking into a police station and pissing on an officer's desk wouldn't get you three squares and a bunk for at least one night, saving your life? confused drunk

I watched Bear Grillis on TV drink the juice of elephant dung, so it seems to me there are worse possibilities as a last-ditch effort to keep body and soul together. Just sayin'.

Cheers and have a great weekend all!

And you, too, Amity. grin
cheers

I agree. That's a wrong assumption. But it's your assumption and not mine. I'm sure you can know something about poverty in another country just by reading about it so I wouldn't imply utter ignorance of anyone just because they're not living with our borders.

Poverty wasn't really the issue. The poverty level is 11,000 a year for ONE person. You won't starve to death or freeze to death from living at the poverty level.

This was about the notion that some would like to promote that people are dropping dead all over the place in the United States because they're freezing to death and dying of starvation. My post was simply providing arguable proof that this not only isn't a widespread problem but is completely avoidable. No one has provided a rational proof to the contrary yet, either, although there has been extensive bloviating, smokescreens, ad hominem logical fallacies, fallacy straw men galore and other assorted diversions. :)

It was interesting. cheers

You did not answer your hypothetical idea,in my post, to be the leader and driving all those homeless, in the police station, to piss on the blotter. As an idea is great, why then, don't you put it in to practice.- I know why..someone else has to do it,not you, your reputation more important, than helping the homeless and the poor, and you say,you were poor in the past, but am almost sure, you feel nothing about the poor.

I don't know if it would be a great idea. It was just a thought. Hundreds of all those people dying of starvation pissing on police desks. I think the real problem would be rounding up that many people in this country actually dying of starvation. Maybe you'd have a better pool of candidates in Greece?
