Even within the article, it clearly states that the fire department is for the town primarily.
The caller was willing to pay the $75.00 when he needed the service. That would be similiar to me having a car wreck then calling an insurance company wanting to buy insurance after the fact.
Of course a socialist newspaper is going to skew the situation to show it in the worse possible light.
Alice_Hooper: I wonder what would have happened if people were trapped in the burning house...
Did you read the part about all their pets dying? I believe they still would of let the thing burn. I couldn't do such a job if I knew that I had to stand by and pick which houses to put the fire out or let them burn. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night or live with myself.

Thats not the first time i have heard of this happening,to me its no different then being turned a way at the hospital because you have no insurance.......very sad indeed..
woodzchick: They had plenty of time to put this fire out and spare the horrific damage done. Instead, they let the home burn to the ground, BUT....responded when the neighbor's fence and yard caught on fire (they paid the tax).
well that is truly sad. the fire district has there priorities wrong if they make decisions based on who does or does not pay fire tax.
woodzchick: I heard about this happening this morning on the news. I couldn't believe my ears and eyes.....my heart sank. A home was left to burn because this family did not pay a $75.00 tax to the county for fire protection. To be honest, I've never even heard of such a thing, but evidently this is a big deal in the state of Tennessee.
I can imagine me in this situation easily at this time. No job, undependable income.....$75.00 may not seem like much to some, but it makes a world of difference to others.
What do you think about this situation? I found several sites concerning this situation, but this site seemed to give more information.
San Francisco has the opposit problem, if a homeless man falls down and cant get up they send a giant firetruck, no joke, I am guessing it is a scam because they must be getting some reimbursement from the federal government.

woodzchick: Yeah, I noticed which website it came from too. I tried to find another, but they lacked the information. The same information was given on the Weather Channel.
And I see your point....but we're talking about a house fire verses a wreck here. You've got to draw a line somewhere.
But how far could we expect a "city" fire truck to go to address a rural fire? 10 miles, 25, 50? Kinda see my point? Would it be fair for the town taxpayers to pick up the tab for "country folk"?
I still think it's sad, but I can also see some logic to it.

This is not really a tax, it is done by individual cities. When living in the city, you pay for fire protection under your property taxes. Living outside the city, you must have a contract with the cities fire department in order to have protection without being billed. Sometimes, it is included in your rural water bill, other times, they send a bill once a year and you pay for the protection (outside the city limits). However, I have never seen firefighters just sit there and watch something burn, just because they did have the contract. The owners of the home, probably had homeowners insurance and that would have paid the fee for saving this house, when they filed an insurance claim. It is heartbreaking and stupid, as the fire department should have fought the fire and collected later from the homeowner. Simple.

Not sure a "pay as you go" system would work? I would love to pay for my car insurance after I have the wreck.
woodzchick: That is a good point...I see what you're saying. If this is the problem them the county should put together a volunteer fire department, I guess what like we have.
I guess my thoughts are.....it's someone's home on fire...screw cost at this point....bring it from every direction and put the fire out.
It seems to me that there are some things in life that you don't look at the cost....you just pitch in and help. I know that is easier said than done at times...but for the sake of humanity.
And my Dear...that's why we've got a screwed up financial mess in this country.
The way I get it, the man's house is located outside the city limits, and his taxes are paid to the county, and none to the town. The town claims they need the $75.00 to maintain an adequate fire dept. to cover the outlying homes. Rules and laws are not always fair, but they must be obeyed. If you're caught stealing, (to feed your family) you will be punished. If you can't, (or won't) pay your taxes, they will take your house. Fair or not, the majority of us manage to navigate the minefield. I work in new home construction, and I know hard it is in this economy, but I manage. That being said, it is unacceptable to just watch the man's house burn! They should have put out the fire, and fined him, or come to some other agreement, after the fact.
