I heard about this happening this morning on the news. I couldn't believe my ears and eyes.....my heart sank. A home was left to burn because this family did not pay a $75.00 tax to the county for fire protection. To be honest, I've never even heard of such a thing, but evidently this is a big deal in the state of Tennessee.
I can imagine me in this situation easily at this time. No job, undependable income.....$75.00 may not seem like much to some, but it makes a world of difference to others.

starshinebright: That is shameful and heart breaking.........
You live in California. Do they have such taxes out there? That's a state that deals with fires quite a bit. And you're right.....absolutely shameful and heart breaking!

gozoman2: ....if ture...only possible in America....
As much as I love my country I'll still have to agree with you on that. Very upsetting. I really feel for this family. I've lost a home to a fire before and it was the most awful thing to experience.

Never heard of such a thing..........in fact in the past the million dollar beach homes on cliffs, after fires, rain causes mud slides...........been left to tax payers.........
woodzchick: We have a volunteer fire department in my area. If not for that, I guess I'd be screwed too.
In the late 80's a volunteer fireman near where I live was caught lighting fires so he could have an opportunity to play hero.
You seem like an intelligent woodzchick, you should be able to live your life without burning anything down. So don't fret over who's coming to put out the fire.
So am I to understand that I am due a refund. For all the years I lived in New York and paid my taxes, my car was stolen anyway. The NYPD did not protect my property.

Well I certainly hope so! But sometimes things do happen out of our control.

...please do understand....I am not a US basher by any count....
...I still think of the US as the land that represents the free West....however much it has lost of it's pride and glory.....
...however...it is also the place where capitalism has been allowed to go to extremes....such as in this case.....negating the protection that a society is duty bound to give to it's members....

It wouldn't shock me one bit if NY came up with a car protection tax other than your car insurance.
I can not really judge on the situation since I was not there. However, if there was a chance to knock down the fire early before real significant damage, I would say the people have a moral obligation to fight it. Otherwise, if the blaze was well envolved than letting it burn down would have been wise.

Agreed! This tax just doesn't seem right. I believe that it is now being challenged.

Unlike Malta where you need to know someone to get anything done.

They had plenty of time to put this fire out and spare the horrific damage done. Instead, they let the home burn to the ground, BUT....responded when the neighbor's fence and yard caught on fire (they paid the tax).
