I have heard of this happening in many states, especially in rural areas. Small towns in Alaska, some unincorporated towns in Kansas and "county islands" in places like Arizona and Nevada.

Bigger towns and cities that have their own fire departments will extend their services to outlying rural areas that do not have their own volunteer fire departments or no fire departments but these services come at a cost, whether through a flat fee or through taxes. Most are fairly reasonable costs; some home-owners choose to pay for the service.

I have seen/read of fire departments that have not responded to fires because they have been told that the homeowner did not pay for their service and I have seen where in the cases of homes being in "county islands" that they won't even take a call.

It is a sad commentary that due to the economy; we can expect those services that we are willing to pay for or can afford to pay for. I don't see it getting better any time soon.

That is just wrong, Over here they put out fires regardless of if you owe rates to the council, the fire service is here to protect people and property.

woodzchick: I heard about this happening this morning on the news. I couldn't believe my ears and eyes.....my heart sank. A home was left to burn because this family did not pay a $75.00 tax to the county for fire protection. To be honest, I've never even heard of such a thing, but evidently this is a big deal in the state of Tennessee.

I can imagine me in this situation easily at this time. No job, undependable income.....$75.00 may not seem like much to some, but it makes a world of difference to others.

What do you think about this situation? I found several sites concerning this situation, but this site seemed to give more information.

Well it sounds just inhumane but at least the fire department didn't let the house burn with people in it sigh

I personally do not agree there should even be any form of payement in situation like the fire fighting corp.....same as the police force......or hospital...or education....

roll eyes

...maybe we are spoilt here.....but those services are expected to be delivered by the state....we pay enough taxes as it is....and certain vital services are the responsibility of the state to provide for the members of that society....

...some seem to think this is some form of communism....I tend to look at it as civilized.....

The people policmen, teachers, doctors, nurses, firemen, etc., are pretty sure to disagree since they feel they deserve to make a living, too.

woodzchick: You live in California. Do they have such taxes out there? That's a state that deals with fires quite a bit. And you're right.....absolutely shameful and heart breaking!

Here at Texas if that were to happen due to taxes their butt would be mud.

ah yes....but you chose to ignore the other part of my post my friend....

...those are the responsibility of the state....those services are part of the resposibility of the state to mantain and pay for...from the taxes pulled in from the society in general....irrespective of who pays what...those services are social and should always be there for all and sundry....

...and not only for those who have the dollars to pay for them individually.....

You're right. I missed the part about you applauding communism. Communism is a very attractive system for people who are happy with others pulling their weight, so it's not surprising it's so popular in our utopian fantasy worlds. I just don't think that you would be as happy with it in reality as you are with it in your idealistic fantasies. But you're certainly entitled to your opinion on it. We just disagree.

Here, they left a home burn down to the ground. The city fire dept. was there but, had to wait for the Township Volunteer Fire dept. Since the house sat in the city and in the Township but the Towship was ordered to be on call, by some Law. The city fire dept. and owners of the house watched and waited ,but the Volunteer Fire Dept. did not make in time. Nothing in this country really makes sense any moore. Hollydunno wave

Amazing how perversely efficient bureaucracy can be, that the pencil pushers are able to maintain a list of who hasn't paid for $75.00 fire protection tax, and yet they have to have long protracted hearings, court cases, committees and sub-committees and summit meetings of world leaders to try and find out what happened to the billions upon billions of wealth that the financial sector and governments of the western world managed to flush down the sewer over the last few years.

Here all fireman are paramedics. Usually if you call 911 an ambulance always goes out with the fire truck, and I understand the tax payers pay a certain amount of money every time that truck goes out on a call. After any truck goes out it has to be cleaned and washed and checked over as it was when it left and that charge is enormous. Is it neccessary? Not sure. Where does that money go?

In the movie, Pursuit of Happiness, Will Smith states that in our country, in the Constitution we have life ,liberty and the pursuit of hppiness. Meaning it's not guaranteed, you have to pursue happiness if you don't happiness is not free. dunno sigh Hollydunno

banks were forced to give loans to people with no jobs by democrat congressmen like barney blow boy frank and a illegal alien from kenya, then the minute men went down and sealed the border and housing prices stopped going up no one can pay their mortgages, no need for hearings just have to wait for the housing market to stabalize in the next five years, lower taxes and get rid of all illegal aliens who hold elected office laugh

Albertaghost: That wasn't the problem evidently as the guy had a record of paying over the years and said he just forgot. As well, on scene he was willing to pay whatever to have them work the fire so seems he had the coin. Just soemewhere there is a disconnect.

That said, I think things are going to change down that way be it a few firings or a law made that everybody has to have some coverage in order to inhabit a dwelling or whatever.

I see this as well. Even though it may be hard to see right now, I think something good will come from this.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I wondered if this was happening elsewhere or just in this particular area. I have to consider myself blessed to have a volunteer fire department in my area. They may not be able to respond as fast, but they do come.

There again, I'm glad you brought that to our attention. I just had no clue that such things went on. I guess I live a sheltered life in some aspects.
