A noble trade, I wish you happiness in it, or should I say fulfilment.

There is nothing good about hunting. In my opinion it's just a waste of time and energy.

On the other hand, a couple of friends of mine who like to go hunting say, that they find peace and tranquility in the countryside especially early in the morning.

I don't think that you need to go hunting to find peace and tranquility.

Most of them are obsessed with their hobby. It comes first in their lives. Some of them it is more important than their family and their future.

Here in Malta they are ready to vote against the government because the EU forbids Spring Hunting.

If it was for them, we would not have become members of the European Union.

If that happened I think we would have been worse off.

Thank you, and I did, for ten years. :wine :It had its heartbreak as well. Some animals we just couldn't save no matter the medicine or how good our healing hands were.It came and went in cycles. Now the circle has come 'round again and I'm back into ranching once more. It too is fulfilling- watching foal or a calf come into the world, watching them grow and thrive.

Dude44: Ya know, those guys with guns 'n camouflage kit....hairy chests and baseball caps. The kind of guys who kill animals. It must feel so cool to have a gun in your hand, and be able to decide wether some totally defenceless animal lives or dies....

i agree op.. i dont hunt and i think its sad some of the people who hunt actually dont need to for food, they are doing it for the thrill of the chase and to kill something.

This is a recurring thread.
Unless you happen to be a strict vegetarian the criticism of hunting either for food or for sport is patently absurd and totally hypocritical.
HOW and WHY can it be morally superior to eat commercial animals?
Tour a Slaughterhouse some time. Then you'll witness some genuine animal cruelty.

What I have not heard from anyone here yet is that the hunting is actually necessary.
Considering that the development of "civilization" has basically destroyed the balance of nature in regards to the big bad predators who were and still are being killed off for the safety and well-being of the people who are now living where they used to live you now have wildlife that is out of control in regards to their own population.
The Deer population in many areas of the USA is over-populated because the Deer's natural population is not being kept in check by the predators who used to eat them. We killed off the wolf population in many areas so there is nothing except hunters to go after the deer...but the "Bambi Mentality" thinks it's evil to kill a deer so the hunters really do not replace the wolf or mountain lion and in terms of being a natural population check.
I guess it's better to let the deer starve themselves in a lingering death in winter because their food sources are dwindling because of over-feeding.
Or take the Black Bear population in New Jersey where there are so many bears now that you might as well put them on the census rolls because they are in many peoples back yards and kitchens looking for food because they do not fear people anymore.
You cannot remove the predators without consequences, but too many people ignore this.

Dude44: I think it's the primordial instinct to kill that seems natural to man, the ultimate predator. Also, men get turned on by guns, because as little boys they have been fed a continual diet of action super heroes, who are all into violence, killing and guns. It's also cool to be able to say to your mates at the bar that you killed some animal, and there was blood and guts and stuff. It's like...manly I guess. I know most young men are really impressed with army stuff, guns and all the kit. It's a game. And shooting things can be fun, cos it's a chase where something dies, but you never get hurt.

Sure am glad I don't have that mentality, or view the world, or my fellow man that way either. uh oh

I grew up with huntimg and fishing, and see absolutely nothing wrong with it. thumbs up

I think the op was talking about men who kills for the "thrill" of it..Not the ones who are doing it because they need food.
In Africa they used to shoot Rhinos and Im kinda doubting you can eat that meat? I could be wrong but it was the rich people who hunted those type of animals along with fox hunting ect..we all have our own opinions on this stuff..

In the past, man hunted ALL food be it meat or vegetables to feed his family and survive. Today, we have the luxury of going to the grocery store, growing gardens and some having personal farms to provide food.

However, hunting when done responsibly is necessary to prevent overpopulation, disease and other problems.

I know several hunters here in the US, friends and family members alike that hunt only in season, purchase legal tags, do not shoot what they're not supposed too and takes every precaution to do safely and legally it within the bounds of state and federal law.

I see nothing wrong with hunting for sport and respect those that have issues with it as well, it's a personal choice, but I like wild game and could never be a total true vegan..as much as I enjoy my veggies, I gotta have steak once in awhile too.

I come from a big hunting area....some people do it for the sake of killing their food for the season, some for the sake of mounting the head on the wall. Most of them that I know do it for the sake of storing their food for the season.

They take a lot of effort in hunting properly and being sure that they kill the deer, turkey, or whatever it is they're hunting with one shot so that the animal does not suffer. They study the animal's habits and perfect their kill methods in order to achieve this. It greatly disturbs them if they actually make the animal suffer at all.

One of the hunters I know says that he recalls the first deer he killed and was not able to kill it instantly. He says that this still bothers him. What is the thrill that he has in hunting? It's the thrill of killing his meal and providing food for his family....a good meal at that.

Refer back to Wonderworker's post.......tour a slaughter house..... a lot worse than hunting. Why not buy the meat commerically? When you hunt and kill something on your own you know what you have, how it has been prepared, and you save your money on top of that.

Don't be so quick to judge hunters. Yes, they're some sick people out there that have the wrong reasons for hunting. Don't generalize all hunters, though.

Also, if the hunters did not kill some of our deer population here we would be killing them with our vehicles. They become overpopulated quickly. A lot of the hunters here participate in state programs where they give the meat to families that can't afford to buy food......Hunters for Hungry or something like that.

I have someone that supplies me with meat, as well. You can't beat a delicious deer steak and you can't buy them at the store either. I can't eat beef any more, so I really enjoy the deer.

Don't knock all hunters....just the morons that give everything a bad name. It you don't do it in your country it doesn't mean that it's wrong to do it in ours. I love wildlife and animals as much as the next person.....I also love eating meat. I also believe in treating the animal with respect prior to it landing on my table to eat. Hunting, if done properly, is a lot more human than a slaughter house.
