craized: oh don't remind me!! I still haven't forgotton the horror journey home last year

Yeah but the sudden thaw began on the night that the worst of it all was forecast! Dublin was told to expect 15-20cms of snow last night....we got none!! So for that reason I won't rule Bunratty out yet. But if the freezing continues....crying

I'm starting to worry and regret ever arranging this meet between cancellations, acts of God and other issues that I refuse to discuss on a public forum but these people know who they are.mumbling

have just been checking to see how far it is from Wexford to Clare- seems the mileage sites are being a bit cagey!! as I told you- I won't know till the day before, how busy i might be at work on the actual day, so I was seeing if there was a chance I could still drive in that time- seems to vary from 80 to 120 miles-I know that my sense of direction is fairly ::koff:: and i have been known to get lost, but that still seems a bit off.

Given that I'm not 19 and searching for a party in Hillhead ( oh the memories!), do the same rules still apply for arriving 3 hours late and expecting a sofa/ floor to kip on??head banger

blipper2000: its all relative of course
you only wanted the best for ye runcle which is commendable
we are so used to having many luxuries in this country compared to other parts of the world i suppose

Exactly..it is all relative. We can identify but not compare with other countries. Read a book on Mother teresa's work and in it, she explained the advice she gives to young people who wanted to travel to India, to volunteer..

She told them to save their airfares and other expenses, stay at home in their own countries and help out local charities...

Poverty to me means lack of....shelter, food, fuel,dignity...and hope.

I've visited 33 countries and saw poverty that you wouldn't believe. Western countries are so lucky you wouldn't believe India where people have underwear and that's about all they have. Here in Cambodia is a little better but not much. Once you get out of the city then you really see people barely eking out a living. Rejoice if you live in a western country! When I returned home after India, the first thing I did was to open the fridge and marvel at the contents inside. We are lucky people believe me.

kielybear: I agree with Rob,not having food or shelter to me is poverty, were blessed in this country,we forget at times how lucky we are.IMO

Many are blessed here. But I am living in the north inner city centre of Dublin, and there seems to be a gap in our system for single men and some women. Lots going around with back packs all day having been kicked out of hostels to roam the street all day in the cold. Some not managing to get a bed in a hostel coz there aren't enough. Heartbreaking to be honest. That is poverty.

Poverty can hit any one ... for example

A girl lived with boyfriend in a house that they bought she ended up losing job and had no income boyfriend lend her money here and there as she waited for social welfare. Then boyfriend wouldnt buy any shopping and would lend any more money then he started eating out and let her at home. S/W called to means test girl arrived at a 4 bedhouse, Big tv hanging on wall everything perfect and social welfare basically laughed and left the house! Leaving said girl in big house but she wasnt allowed turn on heating, no food in house, wasnt allowed to dry her clothes in drier as it would put up bill.
banks and CU dont care what is going on in your life they want the money ....

NO WAY OF GETTING MONEY! when your afraid to wake up because the hunger pain will start and you have to clean a house top to bottom to pass his inspection with a empty stomach.

Thats poverty as well but no one would think it is because people only see what they want to see.

Difficult to comprehend that there are no beds to be had for young people when it is estimated that there are approx 33 thousand empty houses (mostly newly built)around the country. The trickle down wealth system has not worked. The rich get richer at the expense of the poor. The resources of the planet belong to the entire population and each should get their share.

The majority of the homeless men I see wandering around are 35 to 55 I'd say. Those empty houses are owned by someone and I suppose it is not their responsibility to house the homeless with no income.

I was under the impression that the Government or at least the banks who are now nationalized own a hell of a lot of those houses. Correct me if I am wrong. The point is, empty houses and homeless people...doesn't add up.

I am sure there are different ownership issues for a lot of the empty houses. But in my opinion and experience it is too simplistic to think you can just round up the homeless and offload them into empty housing estates....

I didn't suggest that one puts homeless people into empty houses. As long as we have rich and poor so to speak, we will have desirable housing for the well off and build sink estates for the less well off. New ideas are needed.
