they have just passed a law in the province of Malaga here in southern Spain to ban drinking on the streets, because the spanish buy drink at week-ends and go to the beach at night to party but a lot of people have complained about unsocial behaviour, just wondering if any other countries have similar laws.

In the UK, the following applies:
Currently it isn't illegal to drink in public. However many areas have alcohol-free zones that target town centres and/or residential areas where there is a particular issue with drinking in public. Some parks and other places have similar bans; including public transport in London. It is an offence to refuse to hand over alcohol to a police officer who believes you are drinking in these areas. Being drunk and disorderly in a public place is illegal; although providing you don't do any damage or give the cops verbal, the most they'll usually do is take you back to the nick and give you a cell so you can sleep it off.

Yep, us too.. there was a time, many years ago that on a hot night, we as a family could go to the beach to have tea... and many many families did just that... then the young hoods.. would get drunk and break the bottles... broken glass on the beach posed danger for the children... so for the dumb few... it was banned altogether....
always the way with a few ijits... spoiling it all for the greater majority.

Each local Authority can pass a bye-law to prohibit the consumption of alcohol in a public place... can't think of any Authority that has done that though.

it seems like all countrie are bring in these laws so am sure it wont be long in Ireland before they act on the bye-laws.

The bye-laws are sometimes enacted temporarily for concerts, sporting events and the like for the area in which they are happening, but lifted as soon as the crowd disperses after the concert/match or whatever.

Sure do. Here in the U.S. it varies by state, many have laws/ordinances banning ANY consumption of alcohol in public (rules change slightly during ball games in city parks). In many towns in Nevada, one could walk downtown from casino to casino with a beer, etc... I understand from friends in Reno that the police in downtown are citing this now, and many who live there or frequent the town are upset by it.

tha only problem i can see with that is may-be because the people know the ban has been lifted may-be then they will drink in public ?

yea here here the spanish are moaning because they say the law stops them having a good time at week-ends, but the police are saying well behave yourselfs and we wont arrest you misbehave and pay the price.
70Libra: Yeah, but by then the crowd has passed and it's no longer illegal anyway.
Swings and roundabouts! We could go around in circles here
true there will always be lots of different views about the law and drinking in public but i suppose they have to try and do something about the problem.

There's the thing... what one person sees as a problem another sees as a custom
