some people may be happy with a choice, plus it might make it more attractive, rather than having the same rubbish rammed down our throats...

they may change the whole syllabus, which would bee a good thing, in my time we had to do peig, which was sooooooo depressing, it made irish NOT INTERESTING!!!

BTW I am not belonging or siding with any political party....

Yes. I think it's a brave move, finally a political party standing up to the Irish language lobby, they've all been too afraid to up to now.

Maybe it has changed since i was in school but in my opinion the way we teach languages including Irish is totally wrong.
The emphasis was and maybe still is on passing a written exam, should the whole idea of teaching a language be first and foremost to speak it. I learn Irish for 13 years between primary and secondary school and i can hardly string two sentences of the language together. I am sure I'm not alone in that, that tells me there is something seriously wrong in the way we are teaching it.
I'm not sure i agree about making it optional, i think its an important part of our identity and heritage. Would rather see us teaching our children properly instead.

Irish should be made optional for leaving cert, the policy of compulsory Irish has proven to be an absolute disaster, yes it needs to be thought better in the schools and more emphasis should be put on spoken Irish instead of useless books like Peig. Its part of our culture and the people who want to do Irish for the leaving cert will continue to value the language, there's no point in forcing people to do a subject that they have no interest in doing especially kids doing ordinary or foundation Irish.

He want's to replace it by making German compulsory. And Goosestepping for the Enda Youth whom he will lead as they march into Northern Ireland to reunite with their long lost loyal brethern. No, not those pesky Taigues, the other ones.

That seems to be the consensus for this thread, Think Enda has the best intentions and loyalty to the language. seems that a new approach is needed. wasnt it Dev that made it compulsory? I know about 5 words but my boy is Irish born, Irish mum and I will encourage him with the language

All my girls(4) were taught french in their high school and now they, like you, couldn't string a sentence together. Personally I feel that in the first and primary schools Irish should be regarded as a 1st language and in the high schools be continued in someway.
It is such a beautiful language to listen to, I wish I had the patience to learn it, I may not feel so much of an 'outsider' as I do sigh
cheers

He is a complete moron and hasn't thought this through. Irish is compulsory for entrance to the Gardai. It's compulsory for promotion to the Officer Ranks in the armed forces. It's compulsory for entrance to University. It is the First language of the country, from which the interpretation of the Constitution is taken. Is the moron now going to undo all that too? It seems the Brits did a good job in killing our language, and the traitors are supporting them. Tá bealach níos fearr ann, but this isn't it.frustrated very mad

The best thing the Brits did for us was giving us their language.

As for those other examples of compulsion, they'll soon be gone too I'd say.

Wont a child that wants to be any of those things be motivated to learn Irish if he/she knows this? I think motivation comes from within myself.
