ttom500: Perhaps to add just a touch of humor to this Libyan thread....they do know how to have safe and strange revolutions in Belgium. A country that has not had a government for 249 days. going on a world's record.
Some how fries (please note I did not say French fries to show favoritism) got into the middle of the revolution that is pitting French speaking Belgiun's (4.5m) against the Dutch speaking Belgiuns' (6.5m).
Fry eating College students have been rallying attempting to show patriotism and love of country to fellow Belgiuns that are checking accents and drawing boundary lines in many Belgiun cities and towns.
What ever happens here....please don't effect my supply of Belgium waffles.
Ah yes the Belgians and their love for fries and mayo....that's democracy for you
cant seem to find any confirmed reports, but just heard it on the grapevine of al jazeera twitter.
also reports of a gunfight between his sons
Seeing that Al Jazeera is, and always has been, a CIA asset used for disinformation purposes, I wouldn't give the story much credence.
Especially when the "news release" is through dodgy sources like Twitter and Yahoo.
There may possibly be a coup in progress. It has happened in countries all over the world, and the CIA is always looking to set something like that up in Libya.
But to pretend that there is a spontaneous uprising by the Libyan people and that they are storming military bases and seizing tanks is as bad as believing that the US is in Afghanistan for humanitarian reasons.

The government of Libyan Leader Muammar Gaddafi has deployed fighter jets to open fire on pro-democracy protesters, who have taken control of a number of cities.
Pro-democracy protesters in Libya have seized several cities, including Benghazi, Sirte and in the border town of al-Zawiya, reports said on Saturday.
The Air Force now has dispatched fighter jets to attack protesters amid a revolution that appears imminent.
On the ground, forces loyal to Gaddafi are reportedly using live rounds against protesters.
This is while Planeloads of armed foreign mercenaries have reportedly landed in Tripoli.
Meanwhile in Tripoli, protesters attacked the headquarters of the state television station overnight and set fire to the offices of the People's Committees -- the mainstay of the government.
Reports also say that the security forces killed scores of people in the country's second largest city, Benghazi, in just a few hours.
The International Federation for Human Rights says as many as 400 people have been killed so far in the revolution.
The developments come as popular revolutions continue to sweep the US-backed autocratic regimes across the Middle East and North Africa.
In the meantime, there have been unconfirmed reports that Gaddafi has fled the country.
.... and there is the UK's PM Cameron in there already with his trade delegation meeting and brown nosing with the temporary military controllers. The bloody hypocrite.
The Egyptian people don't even know who will rule yet. How is it that Cameron seems to ?

Well, when you engineer a coup of this sort things are pretty volatile. You can't waste any time recognizing the new strongman you intend to install or the natives might choose somebody of their own. And then you'd have to do it all over again.

Fighter pilots claim asylum Reuters reported that two Libyan fighter jets flown by Libyan air force colonels were granted permission to land in Malta after asking for political asylum.
They had left from a base near Tripoli and had flown low over Libyan airspace to avoid detection. They arrived shortly after two civilian helicopters carrying seven people claiming to be French landed after a flight from Libya.
Sources said the fighter pilots defected because they would not fire on the Tripoli protesters.
Leaders break with Gadhafi Libya's ambassadors at the United Nations called for Gadhafi to step down as the country's ruler. Deputy Ambassador Ibrahim Dabbashi said Monday that if Gadhafi does not relinquish power, "the Libyan people will get rid of him."
Two Libyan helicopters and two Libyan air force jets landed in Malta today. The helicopters carried a number of unidentified french citizens escaping the country while the jets where flown in by defecting pilots seeking political asylum.
