toxicaura: UPDATE 1-U.N.'s Ban tells Gaddafi violence must stop now

UNITED NATIONS | Mon Feb 21, 2011 12:34pm EST

UNITED NATIONS Feb 21 (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon held an extensive discussion with Libya leader Muammar Gaddafi on Monday, condemned the escalating violence in Libya and told him it "must stop immediately," a U.N. spokesman said.

"The Secretary-General expressed deep concern at the escalating scale of violence and emphasized that it must stop immediately. He reiterated his call for respect for basic freedoms and human rights, including peaceful assembly and information," the spokesman said.

" ... The Secretary-General underlined the need to ensure the protection of the civilian population under any circumstances. He urged all parties to exercise restraint and called upon the authorities to engage in broad-based dialogue to address legitimate concerns of the population." yep. some are saying yay, some are saying nay. it is still up in the air, but the reports are getting stronger and from more credible sources

Leaving talks in Brussels after agreeing an EU statement demanding restraint and an end to violence by the Libyan regime, Mr Hague said he had no firm knowledge but went on: "I have seen some information that suggests he is on his way there at the moment."
British officials indicated the Foreign Secretary was not referring to any media speculation but other sources.
The Foreign Secretary spoke to reporters after a meeting of EU foreign ministers focused on the revolts sweeping across Libya and other countries in North African and the Middle East.
During a day of talks on an EU response to the Libyan crisis, all EU foreign ministers were being kept updated, but only Mr Hague seemed confident enough to volunteer a likely bolthole for the Libyan leader.
Several media had also reported rumors that Gaddafi was headed to Venezuela. Chavez and Gaddafi have visited each other and enjoy warm political relations.

But a senior source in the Venezuelan government denied the reports.
A source told Reuters that the Caracas government "denies such information".
Protesters have taken control of several Libyan cities, sacking symbols of Muammar Gaddafi's hardline ruler and forcing pro-regime figures to leave the country.
Gunfire crackled on the streets of Tripoli, while protesters set government buildings ablaze, overran police stations and attacked the offices of the state broadcaster.
The eastern city of Benghazi fell to demonstrators after military units deserted their posts on Monday, the Paris-based International Federation for Human Rights said. Sirte, Tobruk Misrata, Khoms, Tarhounah, Zenten, Al-Zawiya and Zouara, were also reported to have fallen to protesters.
More than 400 people have been killed so far, the IFHR said.
Two Libyan fighter jets with four military personnel on board landed in Malta, saying they had fled Benghazi after it was taken over by protesters. Two civilian helicopters also landed on the Mediterranean island around the same time, carrying seven people who said they were French nationals working on oil rigs near near the city.
In Cairo, Libya's Arab League envoy said he had resigned to "join the revolution." Tripoli's ambassador to Delhi also quit, as did a lower-level diplomat in Beijing who said Gaddafi may have left the country, Al-Jazeera television reported.
Libya's justice minister, Mustapha Abdeljalil, resigned in objection to "the excessive use of force" against demonstrators, the Quryna newspaper website reported.
William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, said that he had information that Colonel Kadhafi had left for Venzuela, though it was unclear if he had fled the country.
Kadhafi's son, Seif al-Islam Kadhafi, appeared on television to warn that the north African country faces civil war.
"Libya is at a crossroads. If we do not agree today on reforms... rivers of blood will run through Libya," he said in a fiery but rambling televised speech that betrayed a note of desperation within his father's regime.
Seif al-Islam Kadhafi, 38, who holds no formal government post but wields vast influence as heir apparent, suggested that Benghazi was out of government control.
"At this moment there are tanks being driven by civilians in Benghazi," he said, insisting that the uprising was aimed at installing Islamist rule and that it would be ruthlessly crushed.
Government television also carried a broadcast by a prominent religious leader, saying the protests were being instigated by foreign forces.
The United States said on Monday that it was analysing Seif al-Islam's speech, and that President Barack Obama was "considering all appropriate actions" on Libya.
UN chief Ban Ki-moon called for "the non-use of force and respect for basic freedoms."

Just listened on our ABC TV, an interview with a Libyan University Professor in Texas (USA) who just quarter of an hour ago, using a online network through Jordan, spoke to relatives in Libya and he expresses knowledge of blood bath occurring in Tripoli, and piles bodies else where, he explained Gaddafi supported a number of recent failed blood baths in Africa, Sierra Leone etc, people he supported later took refuge in Libya and now they are the people firing on the crowds. Also claimed Prime Minister of Italy has been supplying Gaddafi with riot gear…

Gadhafi's hold on Libya weakens in protest wave

By MAGGIE MICHAEL Associated Press The Associated Press
Monday, February 21, 2011 4:12 PM EST

CAIRO (AP) — Deep cracks opened in Moammar Gadhafi's regime Monday, with Libyan government officials at home and abroad resigning, air force pilots defecting and a major government building ablaze after clashes in the capital of Tripoli. Protesters called for another night of defiance against the Arab world's longest-serving leader despite a crackdown.

At sunset, pro-Gadhafi militia drove around Tripoli with loudspeakers and told people not to leave their homes, witnesses said, as security forces sought to keep the unrest that swept eastern parts of the country — leaving the second-largest city of Benghazi in protesters' control — from overwhelming the capital of 2 million people.

State TV said the military had "stormed the hideouts of saboteurs" and urged the public to back security forces. Protesters called for a new demonstration in Tripoli's central Green Square and in front of Gadhafi's residence.

Gadhafi appeared to have lost the support of at least one major tribe, several military units and his own diplomats, including the delegation to the United Nations. Deputy U.N. Ambassador Ibrahim Dabbashi accused Gadhafi of committing genocide against his own people in the current crisis.

Warplanes swooped low over Tripoli in the evening and snipers took up position on roofs, apparently to stop people outside the capital from joining protests, according to Mohammed Abdul-Malek, a London-based opposition activist in touch with residents.

Communications to the capital appeared to have been cut, and residents' mobile phones could not be reached from outside the country. State TV showed video of hundreds of Gadhafi supporters rallying in Green Square, waving palm fronds and pictures of the Libyan leader.

The first major protests to hit an OPEC country — and major supplier to Europe — have sent oil prices jumping, and the industry has begun eyeing reserves touched only after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the first Gulf War in 1991.

Tripoli was largely shut down Monday, with schools, government offices and most stores closed, except for a few bakeries, said residents, who hunkered down in their homes. Armed members of pro-government organizations called "Revolutionary Committees" hunted for protesters in Tripoli's old city, said one protester named Fathi.

Official denies Gadhafi headed to Venezuela

The Associated Press

Monday, February 21, 2011 4:46 PM EST

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela's information minister denied suggestions Monday that Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi was headed to this South American country.

Andres Izarra said in an e-mail sent to The Associated Press that "it's false" that Gadhafi is flying to Venezuela. He did not elaborate.

Izarra was responding to inquiries about a statement by British Foreign Secretary William Hague, who said he had seen "some information to suggest" Gadhafi was on his way to Venezuela.

Hague spoke after a meeting of European Union foreign ministers that sharply condemned Libyan authorities for their crackdown on pro-democracy protesters.

But EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton dismissed Hague's comment, saying she knew nothing about it. EU officials who attended the ministerial meeting also described the report as "unfounded rumors."

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is an ally of Gadhafi.

Later Tuesday, the Venezuelan foreign ministry released a statement saying Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro was told by Libyan counterpart, Moussa Koussa, that Gadhafi was in Libya's capital "confronting the situation that's gripping the country."

The statement said that during the phone conversation, Maduro referred to "the historic friendship between the Venezuelan and Libyan people" and told Koussa that he hoped "the Libyan people, exercising their sovereignty, find a peaceful solution to their difficulties."

Maduro also condemned what the statement called "imperialist meddling" during the recent unrest in the Middle East.

The communique said Maduro and Koussa agreed "to share firsthand information regarding the evolution of the situation" in Libya.

Chavez, who shares Gadhafi's antagonistic stance toward the United States, last met with his Libyan counterpart in October during a trip to Tripoli, where officials signed economic cooperation agreements.

During his visit to Chavez received an honorary degree from Tripoli's Academy of Higher Education.

Malta update: local reports here state that the Libyan jets that landed here early monday afternoon were armed with air-to-surface missiles and the pilots state they deserted secret having been ordered to attack civilians in Benghazi. An Air Malta flight managed to leave Tripoli later with around a 100 maltese and many foreigners who report that several thousand others are piling up at Tripoli airport. However another 5 Air Malta flights were refused permission. Airports are either closed or operating minimally, in fact most flights are being redirected to Malta. Confirmed is one Austrian military plane waiting here with others from Germany and Russia reportedly en route. Escapees report total chaos with several hundreds dead with military opening fire on citizens and jets flying low and even opening fire. contrary to earlier reports Gaddafi is still in the country and has addressed the country on national tv to attempt to contain the situation

Gadafi has just been on TV for a short bit from Libya, no real comment from the BBC as yet.

The UN Libyan folk has said they no longer support Gadafi.

In London a protester took down the Libyan flag from the Embassy and Hung what looked like an old pre Gadafi Libyan flag.

The Embassy did nothing ...

grin cheers
