Another Stratfor report...confirms the Libyan aircraft firing on military bases in Libya...considered to be held by units supporting the protestors. Also that Libyan military vessels have fired at shore line targets.
Gdaffi is also ordering executions of soldiers that will not fire on protestors.
If the opposition or the rebelling military puts together a leadership group and you will have a full scale civil war going on here. JMO
UPDATE 1-U.N.'s Ban tells Gaddafi violence must stop now
UNITED NATIONS | Mon Feb 21, 2011 12:34pm EST
UNITED NATIONS Feb 21 (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon held an extensive discussion with Libya leader Muammar Gaddafi on Monday, condemned the escalating violence in Libya and told him it "must stop immediately," a U.N. spokesman said.
"The Secretary-General expressed deep concern at the escalating scale of violence and emphasized that it must stop immediately. He reiterated his call for respect for basic freedoms and human rights, including peaceful assembly and information," the spokesman said.
" ... The Secretary-General underlined the need to ensure the protection of the civilian population under any circumstances. He urged all parties to exercise restraint and called upon the authorities to engage in broad-based dialogue to address legitimate concerns of the population." We are hearing reports the Gahdaffi is using mercs to fire on the protesting crouds. One of my questions is ....were did he get the mercs?
In the book "Blood from Stones".....by Douglas Farah.....he makes a connection between bin Laden's North Africa group....Taylor of Liberia.....and Gadaffi. Taylor and the Libyan Col. go back quiet a ways according to Farah.
Taylor was trained at the Libyan military base...as were some of bin Laden's N. African operatives in the late 1990s.
Am thinking that Gadaffi's Mercs....might be from this alQeada group or remants of Taylor's people that fled to Libya following his fall.
If so....neither of these two groups have anything to lose in this. Only succeeding to keep Gadaffi in power will matter to them. Only succeeding keeps their Libyan safe haven open.
2040: It's well into the hours of darkness now in Libya, and the situation is reported to be extemely tense. From Tripoli, one eyewitness told the BBC that people there are expecting a major event tonight - "a final battle" were the words used.

From BBC It's a sad day...
Lets hope Kadhafi leaves under the cover of darkness...
Just watching U-tube and wondering where this is going to end up... for sure someone will be looking to make money outta it...
Now Lybia is quite a different story from the other countries.. its not just a fight for getting rid of Gaddafi.. tis really down to oil...
I always thought that this was dangerous turf... that a person like Gaddafi could hold the world to ransom, or if he disappears, the legacy that he has set in place .... he may have been indecent in his actions... but he had the world leaders bowing to him many times and courting him for his oil...
Am I wrong in my thinking here..???
Morning Merri
Well no i don't think your wrong, though at commencement events in Egypt an Iranian Cleric popped up proclaiming it is occurring to remove Moslem leaders friendly with the West and particularly America and to get rid of Israel. Also i note North Korea (China) has again ceased talking with South Korea... A bit worm like i think...until the mop flops guess we can't really know the extent of what's going down

ttom500: Khomenie had solution for that after the Iranian Revolution, Emmeline. It was called Evin Prison. 1000s of Iranian that wanted a just and democratic Iran went there. Under the Shaw, Evin prison was also used to oppress the opposition.
Often they will just use the facilities of the prior gov't to oppress the opposition. This Tunasian Ministry of the Interior was Ali Ban secret torture location. If that turns into being the new Tunasian house of corrections....then you got problems coming.
In revolutions....nothing is simple.
absolutely tom. we shall see what transpires.
there is not much we can do for now except hope for minimal bloodshed
RayfromUSA: oops, messed up the quote above. Well, when you engineer a coup of this sort things are pretty volatile. You can't waste any time recognizing the new strongman you intend to install or the natives might choose somebody of their own. And then you'd have to do it all over again.
AgntProvocateur: Libyan jets open fire on protesters
The government of Libyan Leader Muammar Gaddafi has deployed fighter jets to open fire on pro-democracy protesters, who have taken control of a number of cities.Pro-democracy protesters in Libya have seized several cities, including Benghazi, Sirte and in the border town of al-Zawiya, reports said on Saturday.
The Air Force now has dispatched fighter jets to attack protesters amid a revolution that appears imminent.
On the ground, forces loyal to Gaddafi are reportedly using live rounds against protesters.
This is while Planeloads of armed foreign mercenaries have reportedly landed in Tripoli.
Meanwhile in Tripoli, protesters attacked the headquarters of the state television station overnight and set fire to the offices of the People's Committees -- the mainstay of the government.
Reports also say that the security forces killed scores of people in the country's second largest city, Benghazi, in just a few hours.
The International Federation for Human Rights says as many as 400 people have been killed so far in the revolution.
The developments come as popular revolutions continue to sweep the US-backed autocratic regimes across the Middle East and North Africa.
In the meantime, there have been unconfirmed reports that Gaddafi has fled the country.

Oh, that's hard to believe....from the peace loving crowd.
