Watching the BBC news at the moment. The Colonel is still there and still in power.

But the situation is grim.

Human Rights watch said 277 dead up 'til now.

The tribal leaders are backing the revolution.

Sadly some "mercenaries are loyal to Ghadafi and are highly dangerous killing folk all over.

It looks as though he will be forced out but not without a fight and many deaths.

Sad is it not.

So the earlier reports that Ghadafi had gone were not correct.

Many folk still in danger.

Like Egypt it depends on which way the Army goes.

sigh

Latest.

State T V building seized and ransacked and many government buildings burning in Tripoli.

The Tribal folk of Libya has now stopped supporting Ghadafi.

B P and Shell arranging evacuation for their staff.

Many police defected and are setting up watches in parts of the city.

I just hope he gives up soon for the sake of the folk dying in Tripoli and Benghazi.

Just thinking about this in a logical way...

Lybia supplies oil and gas to most parts of Europe.

I dont suppose that Gaddifi's kiddiwink are likely to want to give that up in a hurry...

"shares of Eni SpA dropped on concern that worsening violence in the North African country will disrupt oil and gas production. "

" Libya holds the largest crude oil reserves in Africa. Brent crude oil rose to $104.60 a barrel, the highest since 2008. "

"Shokri Ghanem, chairman of Libya’s National Oil Corp., said he had no information about a disruption in production of crude. Al Jazeera reported earlier that Libya’s Nafoora oil field had stopped producing because of an employee strike. "

ENI, Royal Dutch Shell, BP, OMV AG, StatOil and others all have a huge interest in the proceedings there...

I am betting that nothing happens except a lot of bloodshed.. Lybia has too much of what the rest of Europe depends on... including all the companies who trade shares...

Zimbabwe police arrest North Africa uprising meeting participants

Zimbabwe police have arrested about 50 people who attended a meeting to discuss the North Africa uprisings, just days after government threats to crush any dissent inspired by the street revolutions to the north.

Union leaders, students and human-rights activists were among the dozens arrested on the weekend for “subverting the government.” They were watching a video about the uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia when police raided the closed-door meeting, according to the wife and brother of Munyaradzi Gwisai, one of those arrested.

Mr. Gwisai, a former member of parliament, is the director of the Labour Law Centre in Harare, where the meeting was held on Saturday to debate the North Africa uprisings. His wife, Shantha Bloemen, said she has learned that 52 arrested people are being interrogated individually and those deemed “ringleaders” are being beaten. Other reports confirmed the arrests, saying that a total of 46 or 47 people were taken into police custody.

The arrested activists will probably be charged with “conspiring against the state,” Ms. Bloemen said.

A report on a respected Zimbabwe website, News Day, quoted a police spokesman who confirmed the arrests. The spokesman accused the activists of trying to “subvert a constitutionally elected government.”

Another report, quoting Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, said at least one of those arrested was severely beaten.

Political violence has been escalating in Zimbabwe in recent weeks, spearheaded by gangs of thugs who are loyal to President Robert Mugabe, the 87-year-old autocrat who has ruled Zimbabwe since 1980. Analysts say the Mugabe loyalists seem to be creating a climate of intimidation to pave the way for an election later this year, when Mr. Mugabe is expected to seek another term.

Defence Minister Emmerson Munangagwa, one of the most powerful Mugabe allies, warned recently that any attempt to emulate the events in Egypt would be crushed.

Last week, five youths from the main opposition party were reported missing after they allegedly celebrated the downfall of former Egypt president Hosni Mubarak and chanted that Mr. Mugabe should follow. The five youths were abducted by unknown men who were suspected of belonging to Mr. Mugabe’s dreaded spy agency, the Central Intelligence Organization, according to a Zimbabwe radio report.

It was also the CIO that infiltrated the labour centre meeting on Saturday, leading to the police raid and the arrests, Ms. Bloemen said.

Hi Rob

Just watching U-tube and wondering where this is going to end up... for sure someone will be looking to make money outta it...

Now Lybia is quite a different story from the other countries.. its not just a fight for getting rid of Gaddafi.. tis really down to oil...

I always thought that this was dangerous turf... that a person like Gaddafi could hold the world to ransom, or if he disappears, the legacy that he has set in place .... he may have been indecent in his actions... but he had the world leaders bowing to him many times and courting him for his oil...

Am I wrong in my thinking here..???

Now that the news agencies have gotten back to work after the weekend it was in one of their reports that one of Qaddafi's sons is in charge of the best equipped and trained military units.
The odds are this kid is not going to go quietly.
Qaddafi is probably also worrying about a coup from his generals the same way he came to power.

Neither the protesters or the thugs loyal to Qaddafi now cannot stop.
If they do they will die from the revenge slaughter that will follow whoever wins.

Yeah, it doesn't make much sense to tear it all down and end up with nothing, even if they're successful in getting rid of Gaddafi. Seems protest and revolution are the immediate future for a lot of areas. Sad when you think about all the people being killed.

You made a good point earlier about where all this may be coming from. It wouldn't surprise me to find one country supporting all this or at least encouraging it.

emmaline: have heard similar tom, but tunisia stands out as an example where thats not the case

Emmaline it is not over in Tunasia. They just had a 50,000 person protest that the Tunasia Army met with gun fire. The protest was to remove Alli Ban buddies that he left in gov't.

Tunasia was largely coordinated by face book and twitter accounts.
You going to tell me that all those were Tunasian citizens? How many times do you get approached by net scammers here? See?grin

indeed it is still ongoing, but the people definitely do not want their revolution to become a theocracy. there would be another uprising.simple

Khomenie had solution for that after the Iranian Revolution, Emmeline. It was called Evin Prison. 1000s of Iranian that
wanted a just and democratic Iran went there. Under the Shaw, Evin prison was also used to oppress the opposition.

Often they will just use the facilities of the prior gov't to oppress the opposition. This Tunasian Ministry of the Interior was Ali Ban secret torture location. If that turns into being the new Tunasian house of corrections....then you got problems coming.

In revolutions....nothing is simple.

Perhaps to add just a touch of humor to this Libyan thread....they do know how to have safe and strange revolutions in Belgium. A country that has not had a government for 249 days. going on a world's record.

Some how fries (please note I did not say French fries to show favoritism) got into the middle of the revolution that is pitting French speaking Belgiun's (4.5m) against the Dutch speaking Belgiuns' (6.5m).

Fry eating College students have been rallying attempting to show patriotism and love of country to fellow Belgiuns that are checking accents and drawing boundary lines in many Belgiun cities and towns.

What ever happens here....please don't effect my supply of Belgium waffles. laugh rolling on the floor laughing grin
