zeus911: AFP reports that Mercenaries have opened fire on protesters in Misrata, west Libya. The report passed on by a witness states that the helicopter-borne mercenaries fired on protesters attending a funeral. The sound of heavy weapons firing was audible in the background as he spoke.
They then opened fire on the relatives of the victims who were about to enter a mosque, he said, adding the mercenaries also shot at a building that housed an opposition-run radio station.
The witness also said the local chieftain in Misrata was contacted via phone by Gaddafi's aides, who proposed establishing an independent state in the city on the condition that it does not attack Tripoli.
"We do not have many weapons in Misrata and we are surrounded by two cities that support the regime -- Zliten and Sirte," he added.
Guess this is the big squeeze..."What to do, What to do." sighhh Bribing....give them a little and they will be happy. OMG what a terrible position for the Chieftain to be in...Maybe he will let the people make the decision since it is clearly their life that is going to be put on the line....Basically bricks in the hands of protesters against the military.
Many Britons, workers saved from desert: Two British Royal Air Force Hercules aircraft have returned to Malta after rescuing workers deep in the Libyan desert.
The British Defence Secretary Liam Fox said the planes picked up 150 workers, including many Britons and workers of other nationalities.
He did not say whether the flights from an area south of Benghazi were authorised by the Libyan authorities.
"What the Libyan nation is going through has opened the door to all options, and now the signs of civil war and foreign interference has started." - Saif Al Islam is quoted as saying during a TV interview with Al Arabiya.
The two Maltese catamarans, the "Maria Dolores" and the "San Gwann" which as I had advised this morning were to leave Tripoli at around 6:00 pm this afternoon are in still berthed at As-shahab Port. Authorities have confirmed that this is intentional hoping to take on board as many workers as possible before casting off for Malta.
This is especially significant in view of the fact that no commercial flights by any airline were operated between Tripoli and Malta today. This may also be the impact of an earlier warning by the Maltese Government for all Maltese to urgently leave Libya, in fact local authorities have formally advised all Maltese in the area to board the vessels.

U.N. Council Split on Sending Libya to Int'l Court By REUTERS Published: February 26, 2011
Filed at 2:58 p.m. EST
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. Security Council diplomats clashed on Saturday over a proposal to refer the deadly crackdown against anti-government demonstrators in Libya to the International Criminal Court, council envoys said.
But council members were divided over whether to refer the issue to the war crimes court. It was unclear whether the call for an immediate ICC referral would be cut to get unanimous agreement on the draft's other punitive steps.
In an attempt to break the deadlock, Libya's U.N. delegation, which has denounced Gaddafi, sent a letter to the president of the Security Council, Brazilian U.N. Ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, confirming its support for an immediate ICC referral.

Good for the Brits!!! Think about this one Tom...now will US follow suit...and isn't that a first! Hope everyone in my Country is paying close attention...there will be a lot of skepticism when Obama is up for re-elect....actually, I think most of the decision he is making lately are directly tied to the 2012 election and his desire to win it....not a very good thing for a President to do...put his agenda before that of his country...

25 Italians remain blocked in Amal, south of Libya as an Italian airforce C-130 plane is negated landing permit by Libyan autorities. The 25 persons are said to be low on supplies. Italian Defense Ministry and Italian Foreign Office are now considering all other options to reach them. One possibility is via a sea based route via Benghazi in the vicinity of which is reported to be the Italian Navy Destroyer, the "Francesco Mimbelli".
In another incident around a 150 workers of an Italian firm Bonatti out of whom only 10 are reportedly Italian, had been blocked at least since yesterday close to the Tunisian border have today managed to cross over into Tunisia. An Air Italy flight to leave from Rome's Fiumicino airport is now being organized for their pickup.
On a good note the Italian navy vessel "San Giorgio" has successfully picked up 245 persons from the port of Benghazi out of which 121 are Italian nationals.

We're doing fine so far tomcat, notwithstanding the influx of several thousand person already evacuated through our island as well as all the activity with all the extra flights and military planes coming and going, and our harbours a hive of activity with all the rescue ships and military ships which have included your HMS Cumberland and the HMS York. We're busy as ever but we're managing well so far.
