What am I doing wrong? (125)

I'd just like to know what I'm doing wrong here.
When I see a profile of someone who appeals to me, I'd send them a message and tell them about myself and ask them questions about what they provide in their profile (with me thinking this would engage conversation & eliminate that I'm not a scammer & show that I am genuinely interested). Often I get NO message back (even though they have opened the message and looked at my profile - you can check that...) and if I'm lucky I'd get one message back, after which I wouldn't get any more replies.
Maybe it's just me, maybe it's the people [in my age bracket] on this website who don't appreciate this, but I'm absolutely clueless.
If you have any advice, maybe how you personally engage in your conversations with others, I'd appreciate it.
Ohh and no I don't ask for an e-mail or their name (or say my name) straight away.

I don't think it's necessarily your age group though, heaps of people have mentioned this on here, sending messages and flowers and getting little or no response.

Don't take it personally as there are a number of reasons why people don't respond but just keep trying and you may get a pleasant surprise one day with a worthy message back.
I don't respond to alot of my mail as alot of it is junk mail - well that's what I call it, especially if it is less than one sentence long or just plain boring or I am just not interested....
And once upon a time, I used to reply out of courtesy but now I just waste my time... Harsh but at least I am honest

Yeah, I don't know, I rarely respond or even open them for that matter so when I have and there's no further contact it's put me off bothering in future
