This is just another example of a well meaning but misguided government entity trying to do what best for us.
New York State legislators have targeted freeze tag, kickball and dodgeball as kids' games posing a "significant risk of injury" that must now be regulated at day camps, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.
Fortunately, shortly after this report came out the bureaucrats backed off.
Do we really need the government to regulate children's games, summer camp, etc??? This coming from the same government that's so concerned about childhood obesity. It would seem they would encourage physical activity and alow kids to be kids..
You can probably thank the lawyers for all this baloney and the sue happy Americans.
Some kid gets bonked on the head with a stick and his parents instead of talking to the other kids parents, sue the city with some lawyers push.
I can remember thinking when my kids were little to hang a big sign around their necks saying WE WILL NOT SUE! if my idiot kids fall out of your tree and breaks a leg.
gininitaly: Of course not... but it's come to that.

I doubt this has much to with fear of lawsuits. The state's own statistics, claim that of more than 640,000 children who attend camps, less than two-tenths of one percent are injured in any manner.
In any case, I don't think this constitutes a huge problem that needs to be dealt with in this way or at all for that matter. This reeks of yet another way for the state to extort money and call it looking after children. What other reason could one come up with to explain why the state of New York or any other state would require any program offering two or more physical activities from their risk list to pay a $200 registration fee and have medical staff on hand.
Next thing you know, the state will be telling us how to raise our children, what disciplinary action we can and cannot take, etc... Oh wait, they're already doing that
gardenhackle: Heard on the news that whiffle ball is in the list of activities being curtailed, too.
Yeah, that was on the list as well. We may as well start cancelling the other sports because our children could get hurt and we need the state to step in and protect them.

That it is. I don't know about you but I was brought up with all these games and sports. I got hurt once or twice as did most kids. I turned out OK at least that's whet my shrink says.

Finally, a state is addressing a travesty of justice. I got a "stinger" playing dodgeball once. It hurt. I didn't know I could sue someone when I was 8 years old...or I would have~

I think the potential for broken fingernails should preclude the allowance of tiddly-winks, too.
I'm still working on my i-Phone sports injury app. You put in the sport your kid is considering playing. It lists the possible injuries by age of your kid and skill level, then calculates the potential payout given a great lawyer. This way you can intelligently figure the sost/benefit potential and see if the injury is worth the proceeds of a lawsuit. The lawyers pay to be listed in the App including phone numbers, emais and tweets. I'll be adding whiffleball but have so far not found relavent data on potential injuries...
