I would do what I could to help anyone, perhaps putting my life at risk, without thinking about it. However, would I throw myself in front of a stranger and take a bullet for them? Oh, hell no. And I think, if most people were being truthful, they'd say the same thing.
Depends upon the circumstance? Trying to save someones life and contracting HIV no problem
Trying to recue someone from drowning no problem
running into a burning house no problem
first gut reactions I have no problem with, but having the time to decide if their life is better than mine or if they are more deserving of life, then it becomes very questionable.
I think both yourself and Jean perhaps answered as i would...if there is no time to really think and it is a "reflex" action, I would probably do it...especially if it were someone elderly or a child where your supposedly natural instinct is to protect them...if there is time to ponder on what my reaction should be...I don't know if i would (and of course seldom is there that option in a situation like this...I mean we're not superheroes and therefore its not our job to go out and "save" people..lol)
I probably would try to help or get help for them. I've heard stories about instances where someone was brutally hurt and people would actually walk right on by them. I just can't imagine that and I certainly can't imagine how they could live with themselves. Well, I hope I don't have to experience anything like that, soon.
Absolutely, without a doubt, has happened a few times, and yes, react first, think of consequences later. It is what makes us human, to support, protect and assist, when needed. I don't look at it is as martyrdom, just good old-fashioned compassion for all.
