MADRID (Reuters) – An earthquake hit a town in southeast Spain on Wednesday causing houses to collapse, damaging historic churches and public buildings and killing at least six people.
Some reports said that the rare earthquake, which was 5.3 magnitude, sent tremors through the region of Murcia and had affected a nursing home and the tower of an important church in the town which is dependent on farming.
"Unfortunately, we can confirm ... deaths due to cave-ins and falling debris," the mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jodar, told radio station Ser. "We're trying to find out if there are people inside the collapsed houses."
A Murcia government spokesman said on the radio that six people had been killed in the earthquake.
The quake hit at 6:47 p.m., according to data from Spain's National Geographical Institute. The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter was 1 km below the ground.
Lorca, which has a population of about 90,000 people, dates back to the Bronze Age and probably gained its name from the Romans. The old part of the town is made up of a network of narrow alleyways.

Seven Dead as Moderate Earthquake Hits Southern Spain Updated: Wednesday, 11 May 2011, 1:06 PM MDT Published : Wednesday, 11 May 2011, 12:13 PM MDT
(NewsCore) - A moderate earthquake shook southern Spain Wednesday, killing at least seven people, according to Spanish daily El Pais.
The 5.3-magnitude quake struck 31 miles (50 kilometers) southwest of Murcia, near the town of Lorca, at 6:47pm local time, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported. It struck at a depth of less than a mile.
Spanish officials quoted by El Pais measured the quake at magnitude 5.1. They said it was preceded by a smaller, 4.5-magnitude, tremor.
The newspaper said it was felt as far away as Almeria, on the south coast, and the capital, Madrid, which is in the center of Spain, 280 miles (450 kilometers) away.
Buildings were toppled and cracks appeared in roads close to the epicenter, according to shaken residents.
Part of a traffic tunnel collapsed on a number of vehicles, El Pais said, and there were fears the tremor could trigger landslides.
A Spanish military unit comprising 150 members was dispatched to the quake-hit zone to find and rescue victims.
