A wee bit of advice needed if anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it. So the other day all the electrics went in my crappy car (renault say no more) so its been got rid of phew! Now I am VERY LIMITED with cash for a new ride around and have found a car locally that i'm going to look at tomorrow afternoon. It's a honda civic nothing suped up just a 1.4 97 18 mths nct on it, so I'm wondering does anyone know what to look for in terms of known problems if there are any to watch out for on this particular model/make of car. I've done a little research myself and they seem to be quite economical on petrol and fairly reliable ....... any tit bits of wisdom are welcome.........conversing teddybear

Wish i could offer advice but i'm in the same boat as sugar in that i also get someone to go with me when thinking of changing my car. Had lots of problems last week with mine but lucky to have a friend ( work colleague ) that used to be a mechanic & he has fixed them for me . My mothers words of " you should learn some car mechanics boy " are ringing in my ears now. Trouble is she only said it about 6 months ago laugh

Good luck persuading your friends fiancee to go along hug

Japanese cars tend to be pretty reliable. Their only downfall is when they overheat, the cylinder heads tend to warp.

So there's a couple of things to look out for.

1. White smoke (steam) from the exhaust. Make sure the engine temperature gets up to normal and stays there when you test drive it.

2. Oil in the cooling system. Just make sure the water in the overflow bottle is not black, brown or dirty and that it's not low. Ideally, just the colour of the antifreeze. Look for signs of recent work under the bonnet.

3. Check the oil level on the dipstick. (Water can get into the oil too, the opposite from 2!) If it looks far too high then there could be a problem.....and I mean far too high.

But my guess is that if it was only put through an NCT 6 months ago, then the emissions are fine and the car is tickity boo.

Like I said, the Japanese cars are pretty bullet proof! Now I have to go and get a new back box for the exhaust of my Ford Mondeo. It fell off yesterday.crying

Rear axil main bushings are a common fail...
Also check for brake pipe corrosion at the rear up and around the fuel tank area...

I wouldn't be an expert on cars either but another option is to try the Vehicle History check done by AA . I've never used it so don't know how accurate it is or how much it costs . Might be worth a closer look Serene G . In any case though best of luck .hug

A good second hand car to buy. I had the same model for four years and I only had to replace the radiator. Never let me down, kept on running...till someone nicked it.blues

Honda civics are very reliable, Its a honda so if serviced right it should go 200,000 miles no major problems
A good second hand buy, just look for service history and NCT and you wont go wrong

I once owned a Renault, and vowed NEVER AGAIN!!!!

The best second hand car I have ever bought is a Ford Focus 1.6L Zetec, it is over 10 years old and still starts first time every time.

After that I would go for a VW Golf, but they are a heavy car and subsequently heavy on the fuel.

After that a Toyota Corolla or Carina.

I have had Ford's, Toyota's Vw's but the best car I have
ever had is my present one.
It's an old (97) Volvo V40 with over 260,000 miles on the clock
and it never gives any kind of trouble. It's due it's DOE now so hoping to get another great year out of it.

It's a Tank !!!!

thumbs up

I have a renault van at the minute, only trouble I have with it is the service light might appear every now and again on the dash, something to do with a wire loom under the seat but everything else is fine, renaults are ok for city driving but I wouldn't thrash them on a motorway, asking for trouble, if you treat them good they will last many many years
Best car I ever had was and still is a 2000 honda accord vtec, it never skips a beat, ultra reliable but not very economical so I dont drive it much
