I´ve worked today, went out for drinks and tapas with friends afterwards and arrived home to a flat without electricity or water.
I rang the electricity helpline and they assured me that service would be back to normal by 22.00. Service was resumed a little later than the hour promised....shakily because I´m still losing power from time to time....at 23.30. As far as I´ve gathered the area in which I live was without electricity for almost 4 hours! I live in a city not the country btw.
This does happen occasionally, but it has never lasted for such a long period during the 7 years I´ve lived here.
I´m afraid I lost my temper a wee bit the second time I phoned to check progress and said I felt as though I was living in a third world country. I did apologise, and the call centre agent was extremely polite and friendly, but despite this and the fact I love living here, I do get exasperated by these things.
I can´t remember this ever happening in the UK, my birthplace, does it ever happen to you?

Hi Jan Here we are having problems with the water supply, one day is normal and the next we have not enough. I do recycle most of the water but some days I have had not a drop of water but that does not make up set, I just know that I have to use the water the more wise possible.

Oh I do that too, we have to here in Murcia.
I think I´m just feeling bad because I lost my temper with the poor helpline guy. I was angry, not for me really, (though I was in complete darkness for a few hours and couldn´t shower despite the 40 degrees temperature at the moment), but because I was thinking about the visitors I had last week, one in a wheelchair, and the other who could only walk with a stick. It would have been awful, and dangerous, if it had happened when they were here.

It could be worse though. I like to focus on the positive but sometimes I do too get but for a very, very, very short time.
It would be nice to call the guy (if you can be sure to locate him) and apologise. I have done it.
You are alive and that is the most important event! Anything else can be solved.

The village that I live in is expanding and will, some time in the future be a suburb of Cardiff.
Once in a while because of building work and repairs, I'm without water, or maybe electricity. I usually get advanced warning, though and can just swap my sleep/work cycle around.
However inconvenient it may be to lose supplies, maybe its good to have a kick up the jacksie from time to time. Its always good to have contingency plans and be adaptable.

True, and I did apologise profusely to the call centre guy after my small outburst!
Although we never get any advance warning here unless it´s going to happen due to the reasons you state. It´s something that happens from time to time, why I have no idea, but today, or tonight, for much longer than usual.

Hi Jan,
well it happens here in Christchurch, after 7350 earthquakes since september 2010, the latest big quakes were last monday. a 5.7 followed by a 6.3 just over an hour later. Power outages are common now as the system is overloaded and sewer and water is still off to many homes. People have to use a hole in the ground or a chemical toilet or if they are lucky they have a portaloo in their street.

How awful, but I can understand a power shortage in those circumstances.
The only expalanation I´ve been given is that so many people here are now switching on their aircon!

JAN_is: Read my post above! I understand the consequences of disasters, but that´s not the case here.
You are very fortunate. Our power goes out constantly...sometimes for days, without any reason other than a mismanaged power plant. The resorts here all provide there own power generation, but most folks like me can't afford such luxuries. I love it !! Camping out !! In the dark...with the mosquitoes and crickets and things you can't see....

And, of course no a/c.
Camping out in the city centre isn´t really a viable option!
Now if I was living an hour away on the coast, perhaps.

we have many black outs here! and i dont know how it works but when the power goes out the water,,,runs slowly out the tap! and here it can take hours, 8 was the most! the other night, was all night but only our house cause the builder did sumthing outside, so being eaten alive by mossies was fun
I live on the Great Lakes…no shortage of fresh water here. Desserts are spreading and increasing across the world…Climate change. Not much that we can control.
The largest heat wave in 3 Centuries is occurring in Europe. Years to come, maybe the Great Lakes will dry up.
