It wont achieve anything while the bigger polluters keep polluting. China, India act. They wont stifle their growing economies.

You are quite right too in that trees eat carbon, so logging compounds the problem.

To me it seems like just another tax when we are already being robbed on a daily basis.

The same issue has been much debated here in the States, and I have heard much the same objections. To me they all seem to boil down to "Why should I pay, if it won't work right away?"

Despite the memorable rhyme, I find that short-sighted and selfish. Humans didn't pollute the Earth overnight, so we can't clean it up overnight. Those of us who began polluting it earlier, and took advantage of the situation, should recognize that and work toward a compromise with those who are only beginning to do so, and want to take advantage just as we did.

All of our unborn great-grandchildren do not yet know what nation they will be born as citizens of. Would you pay an additional tax if you knew for sure it went to the care of your own great-grandchild, but not if went to someone else's?

Dagosto: What would you prefer, then? Nothing?

Of course.

Goobal warming due to CO2 is a total lie.
A politically driven scam to rob the entire world and install global government.

There are genuine pollution issues in the world that need to be addressed, but taxing CO2 will not do anything about those. It will simply rob the poor to make the rich a lot richer.

Specialize in taking partial quotes out of context, do you?

I've heard of people who do that before. They're called "weasels."

Australia used to have a democracy with elected members of parliament representing the voters concerns. Today we have a Prime Minister babbling on and on expressing her personal thoughts on climate change and to bring in a new tax grab in its name.
There are lots of people proclaiming they know what the future climate change will entail.
Australia coming out of a 12 year drought, so now some proclaim the ocean will rise one and half meters, some even believe that politicians tell the truth, and of course know what they are doing, they care about something other than there own pay packets...

Me i think they are talking a load of crap

Carbon Tax - It's just another way for special interests to extort money, with the government being one of the greediest of the special interests.

I remember my grandmother telling me when I was a kid that they'll tax the air you breathe if the could figure out a way to meter it. This amounts to the same thing - a new, creative way to steal.

I would not worry about it.
Just because Prime Ministers Bob, Kevin, Julie and the two independent Prime Ministers and that mad Prime Minister in Hobart, and the 'Faceless' Prime Ministers of labor think they can get it through does not mean that it will go through.

Why?

Because Prime Minister Tony is going to win the next election by a landslide, before the carbon tax can be imposed and if the outgoing Labor senators give enough seats in the senate to the Liberals then the tax will be dead in the water.

If the greens still control the senate and reject the cancellation of the coming tax then Tony will say 'Time for the opportunity that Julia didn't give Australians - to vote on the carbon tax properly'.

Then it will be a double dissolution election, just after the first, out will go the greens and finally...We will be back to having one Prime Minister.

What is really sad is that I know Labor voters who voted independents last election because they were angry at Julia. This time they are SO angry at Julia that they are voting for the Liberals. Why? not to help the Liberals but to save Labor from its current leader and current front benchers and to start rebuilding in opposition.

There are a few ulterior motives of this government gardenhackle. The last election had the right wing side 74 seats and the left wing underperforming government 71, but with a green and three independants they have 75, enough to retain power. At the moment the greens with only a single seat in the lower house have control of the upper house, so the current PM is doing what she is told or the greens will do a vote of no confidence and an election will be held. The government is currently 27% popularity so they will be slaughtered and as the greens hav just started their term they will remain in control of the senate so they would have nothing to lose. They have a noose around the governments neck and everyone knows it. Bring on the next election. Here the control of the house is very important politically because the powers that are invested in the president in the US are invested in the PM and his/her cabinet of ministers.

This was sent to me today:

"An explanation of the new carbon tax for your edification.

I think I get it, but I might be wrong. From what I understand, the government proposes to collect tax from the carbon emitters who will pass the cost of the tax onto us, so it really won't cost the emitters anything. Then the Government will compensate we dumb huddled masses with a tax rebate paid with the money they collect from the emitters, so it won't cost us anything either. So no-one will be out of pocket, there will be no change in the amount of carbon emitted but at least a whole bunch of otherwise unemployable public servants and political party comrades will be employed to supervise the transfer of the money between the accounts. It's just like moving a dead body to a new coffin, hoping it will come back to life.

I think I've got it but you might feel you need to correct me. However you might as well save your energy in case someone puts a tax on it. "

Yeah well Conrad mee thinks, (1) plants love carbon dioxide its absorbed from the air by plants using photosynthesis.

(2) if earth warms up, the ocean will to and more water will evaporate and whippy more rain...
