Faithe: Thanks bj, thanks everyone. He's a great dog and a great mate, l will just enjoy his company for as long as l can. Hopefully he comes good again this time. Ive just never seen his leg so bad.

Hi Faithe I understand completely.... Shane my year old Golden could not barely walk a few years back as he is riddled with arthritis... this guy is very very special he has been my rock, through everything... he is convinced he is human and I am His responsibility.
Anyway I am using this anti inflammatory and painkiller called Metacam it is a liquid and he is pain free,it is one of the safest drugs out there. There is a medication also that can be injected into the joint to cushion the bone again.Your Vet I would think already know's about this but Just In Case,as a lot of this stuff is used for the horse racing world.

The Metacam is pricey for dogs but I purchased the horse strength which is more concentrated and cost effective I only give him .3 of a mil a day.He has been on it for 3yrs.

My vet gave me a sample to try and it worked great.Just a thought.....here is another one to think about and only as a last resort ! you could have the offending leg amputated if the other one is ok. its funny dogs seem to cope very well.I suggest this only if its a life or death situation and his type of breed can live to about 15 or 16 yrs.

I know with Shane I would do it in a heartbeat as he loves life so much, but then again it all comes down to the quality of life and each case is different as your guys other leg might be going as well.

Thanks Martia. I know about Metacam, its good stuff have used it many a time before for pain relief for the dogs. The main problem is he is causing problems with his other back leg to trying to support his bad one. The good hock joint is quite weak and gives the appearance that it could go the same way any day. He regulary goes to a Greyhound Chyropractor/ Manipulater, in fact it is due to him that Josh is still around. He has fixed both hocks at least 4 times. The problem is occurring cause he is such an athelete and has the mind of a working dog, he turns sharply while at full gallop or slams on the brakes suddenly...like a stock horse and keeps damaging the joints in his hock. He weighs in at 30kg and is a large dog and is to heavy to be turning like that. He keeps jarring the joint. I will just watch him and as long as he has quality of life he will be ok but the moment he loses that l will do the right thing for him.

You would think that the that the sheer pain does not slow him down at all, thats the prob with these dogs as the work ethic is so strong in some of them that they just keep going blindly.....thier own worst enemy. But the main thing is that he has been loved all his life.
