I was sifting through some of my mother's things again recently and found the following advice, amongst some other interesting stuff.

10 pieces of advice to be passed on to your mum, your daughters or granddaughters, nieces, aunts, girlfriends, etc.

1. Don't imagine you can change a man - unless he's in nappies.

2. What do you do if your boyfriend walks out? You shut the door.

3. If they put a man on the moon - they should be able to put them all up there.

4. Go for the younger man. You might as well, they never mature anyway.

5. Men are all the same - they just have different faces, so we can tell them apart.

6. Best way to get a man to do something is to suggest he is too old for it.

7. Love is blind, but marriage is a real eye-opener.

8. The children of Israel wandered around the desert for 40 years. Even in Biblical times, men wouldn't ask for directions.

9. If he asks what sort of books you're interested in, tell him cheque books.

10. Remember a sense of humour does not mean that you tell him jokes; it means that you laugh at his.

My folks always told me to try and work for myself, that there was nothing different about the person employing someone and the person working for them, just their frame of mind. It must have worked as after working for bosses and making them rich for most of my life, I finally bit the bullet and set the bookshop up 7 years ago.

Trouble with working for yourself is that when you want to take a sickie, the boss know hows sick you really are and how much it will hurt the business.

A lot of employees affraid of losing their jobs are now working when they would normally have taken a sickie just to try and gaurantee their employment tenure.

daggyone: And people wonder why their jobs are being shopped offshore

Where I work we all have to punch a code on a keypad to gain access to the factory. This means if one person comes through that has a cold and has sneezed on their hands there is a strong likelihood of passing it on to others.

Sometimes it is better for business to send the sick home, which was enforced when the swine flu epidemic on.

Meanwhile in countries where these sick day laws don't exist, they are doing the job many Australians used to do, but their bosses got jack of their work ethos and shipped the jobs o/seas.

Daggy not all jobs are exported, somethings are still done in Australia. In fact the company i work for actually has won international contracts over larger overseas companies. It is also the only manufacturer of the product in Australia which was one of the reasons the contract was gained as quality was in the company's control.

Capitalism means that if the product can be made cheaper elsewhere that is where the product will be sourced.

You'd think that's what BHP would have thought, but allas, over to China goes the Hastings and Port Kembla infrastructure.
