Do/Did ...... you slap your children?

Are in favour of slapping or totally against it?

My sister was in town with her little daughter years ago walking down the street when suddenly the little one decided to throw a tantrum. As my sister was dealing with it the way it says in women's magazines this old woman walked by and took one look before saying, 'that child needs the rod'!laugh

I don't believe I got any more than was necessary as a kid and it hasn't done me any harm .

Yes I'm in favour of an occasional slap when a verbal warning and/or a deterring stare has failed .

The namby pamby approach is well intentioned - but it doesn't work. All a person has to do is take a look around.

Ever seen a kid throwing a wobbler in a supermarket, pulling stuff off shelves, shouting. . disinterested mother wheeling a trolley with a blank look? Kids when I grew up were slapped, they didn't do that.

Ever read the court pages and see juvenile offender after juvenile offender? Don't care about the law, mugging old people etc?

Had your house/car/street vandalised by young people drunk or otherwise?

No consequences for negative behaviour = growing up with no respect for people or their property.

that argument doesn't hold up.. never has, never will!!! i've known plenty of people who got a few thumps from their parents growing up as a form of discipline and they turned out to be proper scumbags... the reverse is also true!!

bad parenting may be partily responsible for badly behaved kids and young adults but slapping and thumping as a form of discipline does not a good parent make

The argument does hold up. I'm not advocating slapping children indiscriminately - that leads to worse behaviour later on. Some kids don't care about the other punishments, and sometimes, neither do the parents.

I know that when I was a lot younger and had the chance to do something wrong, often the fear of what my father would do held me back - stopped me ending up in worse situations. As I got older, I developed my own morals and values, then slapping wasn't necessary.

One things for certain - there are more young scumbags out there now than ever there was before. Alot of them have no respect for anyone or anything.

judging by the replys i guess it's all about personal taste and morals as a parent. parents have the right to choose how they parent their kids.

but for me, when i have kids (someday hopefully) i won't be using 'slapping' as a form of discipline...

Totally against it.

To me slapping means the parent has lost control.

I was slapped as a child and dont hold with the "it didnt do me any harm" way of thinking. It did harm, I used to feel humiliated and worthless, which was worse than the pain from any slap.

am i right in saying all who have answered so far arent parents??

theres a few things...dante hit on it a bit...

theres just giving ur child a slap.. or..theres thumping the living daylights out of them

if u bring ur kids up in fear of a slap from nowhere and everytime it does something wrong, they become immune and desensitised.. if u dont..u could end up with a hooligan too...wheres the balance?

every child u have is diff..and letting them know the boundaries is the first step..and discipling early is also key to it..theres control and theres ur child using its own cop on to know something isnt right....as i said every kid is diff..i know my 3 very much so differ massively from each other and diff discipline is used on them..

kids are alike dogs..they need training at puppy stage...and in the positive way but letting a roar when uve asked them 5 times to stop something is normal....and talking to unlike puppies..actually explaining to ur child the rules as u have them.

would u rather ur child stops before doing something and thinks....this is wrong..or.. my Da will kill me..

I was slapped as a child, jesus i was slapped as a teen.. the knowledge that if i pushed my mother too far i would get one..often would make me stop..before i did..

the child has choices..they know they are doing wrong and will face the consequences of their parents discipline seems to be forgotten in these arguments...

i dont agree with excessive slapping..but my kids do know that if they go beyond my limits there is a possibility..

we lead quite a peaceful existence..the odd roar..but in general id say my kids respect me and take my guidance..rather than fear me...thats how i want it.

I would be happy if i got a few slaps back in my days. It was always a whipping and there was no escape i even had to chose the instrument i.e cane, bamboo sticks which never breaks, the leather or the electric thick wire. Still have trade marks on my body.
I used to admire kids my age who just got 1 or 2 slaps...
