I wonder why divorce rate in America is so high and its seen as normal or natural.well,i personally frown against divorce and would always frown against it.I'm not a preacher of God but why would anyone go into marriage swearing 'for better for worse and till death do us part' at the court of law and religious/Worship houses and few days ,months or years after dissolve their marriages..What ways do you think divorce can be reduced to a minimal or even avoided completely ?I personally think that materialistic couples have rough marriages than ever example is Kim Kardashian and Kris..what's your take on this ?

What is the purpose of marriage? Marriage did not just come out of nowhere. It is the only way for a man to ensure (short of locking a woman in a dungeon) that the children she bears are his.

It has only been in the last 50 years that women got almost the same rights as men in the west. Women can be self-sufficient. They no longer need a man to pay for their food, clothes, housing and women no longer have to put up with beatings, cheating, drinking, etc.

During the time when divorces were uncommon, women were "chattel," as much as children were chattel. They had NO rights. It is still that way in some countries.

What you say about American divorce rates being high, you forget that in America, until this century, women were, by law, not equal to men. That status has changed with the political climate. The best that any administration was able to do was to get a "temporary" equal rights clause in, but since Bush's reign, women's rights are once again curtailed and the amendments by Clinton administration not extended.

Anyway.. more interesting is that in countries where the divorce rate was traditionally low (i.e. Korea at 5%, that rate has jumped big by 40% to 7% total with 57% of people who initiate divorce being women).
Same in other traditional countries.

The divorce rate in America did not jump at all. So perhaps you should think about it in terms of rate of increase, rather than picking one country and implying there's something wrong with the morality there.

One of the reasons for high divorce rates in certain countries is the fact that both parties can easily ask for a divorce and this without too much hassle. At times it’s certainly an easy way out, is it always the best thing to do, I doubt it but it’s part of people’s freedom to do so and this as they please whether we agree with them or not, whether we consider it right or wrong.

It is not a matter of nationality, divorce rate is increasing in most every country!

Some trends are rather remarkable, for example:

The divorce rate in America for first marriage is 41%
The divorce rate in America for second marriage is 60%
The divorce rate in America for third marriage is 73%

It is very easy to get married for us in America and to divorce also. I got married when I lived in Reno and did the divorce paperwork myself. I was only married once.

I like it that in some places (not America) it is so hard to get a divorce and therefore people don't jump into marriage as quickly as we do.

Ok, here is my realistic (almost pessimistic view). I think the divorce rate among americans are high for several reasons (now when I say all of this, this is GENERALLY speaking, not everyone is like this). But, americans tend to be shallow (this is something I've witnessed first hand in LOTS of reltionships). People will rush into marriage without really getting to know their partner first. Probably because they know they can just get a divorce if it doesn't work out. Or it could be a self-esteem issue, if they don't get married quickly, maybe they think they are going to lose their partner?

And why is it lower in other countries? From what I've seen, it's due to family, culture or religion. I would imagine that in those places, if there wasn't a social or family out-lash related to a divorce, it would be more common, especially with arranged marriages(I have also seen how this affects people).

It comes down to this, people are the same no matter where they are from, if it were more accepted in other places, it would be just as high.

I agree that divorce is so easy these days that so many seem to get married without much soul searching about their partner - never mind America, look at Katie Price (aka Jordan) in the UK.

Maybe people should not be allowed to marry unless they have been dating for at least a year? And my last ex-partner reckoned that
where people married in church, the churchmust be involved
in counselling before a divorce would be granted. Seems fair enough to me.

I come from a family where divorce/partnership break-up is very rare - which often makes me feel like a black sheep..

Makes me wonder why a man look at a woman, or a woman look at a man, and they decide to marry before they are at a "eternity level" together.

The marriage agreement is a nice user manual, come to think about it. Maybe people should learn to read grin
