Take some time to get to know people on the forums and once you feel confident about them you could exchange phone numbers -not cell- but their house and if they refuse:

They might not be in the place they say,
They might not have privacy to talk
-perhaps they are married or in a relationship or something else-.

Be alert!

Isn't that faster and more practical just go for a Skype conference?

lifeisadream: Either of them is practical but with the house's phone number you can be certain were that person is, to start with.

Otherwise they might say they are in London but they could be in Ghana or someplace around.

Well, that makes sense. But just remember, you can always get a Skype number (land phone number), of almost any Country, and simply say that's your real landline number. When somebody calls you through that number, you just answer via Skype and no one will note the difference. So basically there's no way to make 100% sure if the other person really lives where he or she said, BUT having access to his/her IP address. Which is not that easy (and in some Country, it's illegal or strictly reserved to police and gov). And even if you somehow manage to get his/her IP address, the scammer may used a proxy server, which displays maybe an another IP address, from another provider in an another Country. In the end of the story: just ask for the passport lol

Thanks Life.

This is a major redflag for me - if I cannot phone you at home on land line phone or visit you at home in your home then something is seriously wrong.

lifeisadream: Have you heard of false passports too? Or photoshoped passports?

Any way, I trust no one until I have some confidence through our interacting in the forums, then I have exchanged my personal e-addy with a few friends here.

I do not have a web cam but if I get interested in someone I will ask for his house’s phone number first and then I will ask to meet.

I am not going to spend hours chatting either on skype or in a phone, there are more interesting things to do together in real world.

Obviously, when I said "ask for the passport" I was just being sarcastic.
If you don't want to spend time for talking via Skype or phone, it's fine: you don't have to do it.

You don't, you have to have trust...

But the longer you are in communication with that person, the more you learn about that person...

agreed

I learned early on that a phone that is never answered - and plans to visit that keep getting changed???? - means he's married

I do not have a landline phone - a lot of people don't, tho I seldom answer my phone - I never thought how that might appear - fact is my phone is a cell but I keep it at home & don;t often have it with me...

it depends to both..
sometime 1 minute is more to know someone than whole life's communication
