“I wish to thank all the players, managers, staff and most importantly the most wonderful fans in the world.
“Finally I would like to thank my wife Jane, my two amazing kids and my entire family for their unwavering support over the 16 years and 125 caps.”

Shay was a great goalie for us and he will be missed big time. He is right up there with Packie Bonner.

mcattack: I'd say he made 2 mistakes in the Euros, not bad in 16 years of International football...he was, still is and probably always will be Irelands best goalkeeper...anyone that says any different are begrudgers and haven't a clue about football!!

I said at the Euros he wasn't his best..I'm not talking about the rest of his career..It was the right decision at 36...do you think he should stay on until hes 40? Hes no buffonireland

Exactly!! I'd say he wasn't at his best against Croatia but he was one of our best players against Italy and Spain. You hit the nail on the hit when you said the day every Ireland fan has been dreading. I certainly was. I've heard people saying he was crap against Spain but I think the scoreline would have been a lot heavier than 4-0 if it wasn't for him.

I had a feeling after the Euros he would retire though because was very non-committal when asked if he was going to retire. He was a great servant for Ireland for many years and I would go as far as saying that his International retirement is the most significant one in a very long time.

Nah it's fotball scribs, Gaelic Football can be passed by hand from one goal to another and scored without using your foot, that's not football in my eyes!!

He was the best keeper since Packie Bonner to wear the Green . Maybe it will give Stephen Henderson a chance now at International matches , I class him better than Kieran Westwood in fairness .

He was the best goalkeeper of all time and played football at the highest level for 90% of his career, if he had of ever signed for Celtic they probably never would of cenceded a goal laugh Bonner was a good keeper but nowhere near as talented as Given!!

As for Paddy Kenny...there's no point in replacing a 36 year old with a 34 year old, i can't see him wanting to play for Ireland again anyway...Westwood is the future and hopefully he steps up and does a good job thumbs up
