I like to stay in town so I keep an eye on Wotif, Expedia etc plus get a weekly email from Travelzoo which gives you the heads up on hot deals for accommodation and lots of other stuff. I book asap so as not to miss out.
Going to book my flights soon, cheap as chips right now

It would probably be a good idea to decide on a venue soon, I found it easier to stay on Swanston as I did the first time around, rather than the back of woop woop like I did last time I'm sure my entourage who walked me back to my hotel after the meet agree it was a bit of a hike

Like anything, we can look for "cheap" and then find it is 20km away from the centre. I am sure that if we can fix a date, then we can arrange for all of us to stay either in the same hotel (always many rooms apart) or close by.
Many group bookings at the same place can be advantageous. I am doing a road safety conference soon in Melb and when we book through the organisors, we get a good rate. Last time, I had a room on the 12th floor while the next nearest was on the 9th. But my fridge had a few bottles in it and was a good meet. Gawd those coppers can drink
Okay, Y&Gs has been good. Last time, some wanted to go to the casino for the rest of the night. Maybe we could organise to stay there with a 'group discount' if enough are willing to stay at the same venue. Does not have to be there but just my idea about it. But we do need to get this organised and commited early.
