LadyDiz2: Do tell rohaan.
No kiddin'---a taker. It all started like this: I am an aficionado of The French Revolution and the years just preceding it. At the Bourbon/Hapsburg court a Catholic Cardinal reigned supreme as The Grand Almoner Of France. Because of some ages old fun-making of her mother, Maria Theresa, Marie Antoinette disliked the Cardinal intensely. He tried again and again to win her favor, and became vulnerable in the process, ultimately being used as a dupe in the now famous "Affaire de Collier" (The Necklace Affair). His name was Louis Rohan. His story has always interested me, and that is how I decided. Someone else out there in cyberland is using "Rohan", so I wasn't permitted to, but adding the additional 'a' allowed it to work. He was one of the few of the court (because public opinion favored him during the revolution) to escape the Reign Of Terror. (there is no way to put all of this in a nutshell, but that is some of the history).

That is interesting! The Ancien Regime of that era was fascinating with all the intrigue and political machinations. I'm watching the new Musketeers at the moment and good old Cardinal Richelieu seems to have had something in common with Louis Rohan. Wonder if the story of the Queen's necklace originates with Rohan? confused

It's a very long story. It actually originates with two jewelers who had created the elaborate and super-expensive piece for Madame DuBarry, Louis XV's last mistress. Unable to recoup the cost, the jewelers faced liquidation and expulsion from court, which was the worst thing that could happen in those Versailles days. (People who had been dismissed from the French court often committed suicide). A ne'er do well hat and dress repair maid was able to prove a link to royalty and gained entrance to court, imposing herself as a friend to Marie Antoinette, who barely knew of her existence. Using her charm, she convinced the Cardinal that he was now in favor again, by writing false letters and exchanging false messages back and forth. After finding out that the necklace was made for DuBarry, Marie Antoinette lost interest, but the messages being given on her behalf, through Rohan, to the jewelers, along with a theatrical ruse, put the necklace on the royal household register and the bill was stamped as belonging to Marie Antoinette. Rohan had unknowingly assisted the thief, by supporting her financially while she created the scheme. It was complicated, the Cardinal was acquitted at trial, the "countess" was whipped and branded publicly and sent to prison, and the Cardinal, though acquitted, was fired from his bishopry and sent to live at his estate some distance from Paris.
