epirb: well no Merri , . I have looked in Yates garden guide ,a NZ native tree book (a good one ) and a booklet on noxious weeds . Google image search as well . It looks like Kahili Ginger to my mind but wrong colour flowers .

Often flowers, and leaves, reflect the climatic and soil conditions. I have a few clamidias around my place and while some are flowering in one spot, others are not. And those exposed to more sun have lighter leaves than those fully shaded all day long. And the bromiliads in the front garden have been overshadowed in parts by the neighbours bushes and are not doing so well. Need to relocate those to full sun.

So Merri's could be the Kahili Ginger, or a close relative.

Merriweather: Epirb and Rob.... This is a New Zealand something or ruther... I can't remember the name, I was giving it a try.. bought it online... Supposed to grow to about 7feet. Its shooting up nicely...

I expect you will both know it...Has purple flowers at the top when it grows..

Hi Merri, wave I think it is an echium, echium pininana (do a google image search), which grows as a single spire up to 3m. Biennial or annual but will reseed (everywhere) if the conditions are rightps, that tea is one of my favourites grin

I tried finding the plant yesterday but couldn't locate it

meanwhile this afternoon

Practicing panning using previously panned gold /sand (photos displays black sand where the gold in your pan is located ) is what was collected to practice with two weeks ago

Teeny weeny bits Rob... I hope you find a great big lump soon...

I guess that it would be a great thrill all the same..

I found some weird rock today ... It is so very light, but has silver sparkles right thru it..

I found it in the dunes at the beach. Went there with my granddaughter to draw pics in the sand, but because it was not the hottest day, we went up further to sit and play in the warm sand of the dunes.. so we had a great day anyways..

Lancewood , one of NZ's trees has a number of changes as it matures and if you did not know them you would swear they are different trees . Good to see Merri's plant is not Ginger as it's one of the worlds most invasive plants .

the seeds of wild ginger are useful, they can be ground up to make tiger-barn like paste
